The only ones I'm sure about are the all-black snakes.

There's too much variety in the rest of them.

I've had snakes on the lawn, in my Lab's mouth, in azalea bushes that I was trimming, dropping out of trees over my head, on my front porch, under the front step, and the worst one, in my kitchen! Those are just a few of the snakes in my yard. :lol:

Most of them were water moccasins, rattlers, and cotton mouths. A few were rat and grass snakes.

The head shape is good for ID also but there are exceptions, like the deadly pit vipers.

We used to keep a poster of SC snakes posted in our garage for identification but usually there's no time to check it out.
 
maybe a "pocket quick-reference guide" to poisonous snakes for people living in those areas...and/or maybe as part of someone's disaster-preparedness kit?

just thinking out here....

when my aunt and uncle lived in Wilmington, NC, they had snakes all over the place, including in house and the pool of the house they bought. That and the lizards and other "crawlies" was one of the things that led to them moving back to CA.

They're good for becoming familiar with snake types but they aren't practical to keep on your person at all times. Snakes can show up any time, any where.

BTW, they're called venomous, not poisonous, and even non-venomous snakes can give a person a painful bite.

I just keep them all at a distance. :lol:

Lizards are OK; they eat lots of the mosquitoes and gnats. Plus, they're cute. :D

Venomous spiders are bad though. :(

Yes, I enjoyed living in San Diego. No bugs! It was wonderful!

Maybe there's an app for that. Take picture and the app sends you instant info on the type of snake and if it's poisonous. :hmm:

As for the many deaths attributed to the trees - no there won't be a 'tree law' enacted as many cities are trying to go 'green' and prefer to preserve older trees that are still healthy. You can't just go around chopping down every tree you see because it *might* someday fall on someone.

Also, I was told that Hurricane Irene is being given more media coverage that Hurricane Katrina... :hmm:

must be because they were grabbing straws for crying wolf. Hurricane Irene wasn't what they predicted it to be and that led to a very costly preparation especially evacuation. So what to do to recover from gaffe? Keep finding and reporting as many flood zones as they can find to make it sounds like Hurricane Irene was as bad as Category 4.
