Transfering to a Deaf school?

I have been to a deaf school before--I started when I was three and left in second grade to go to the public schools that I attend now. I can hear because of my cochlear and I have excellent speech--I can get around easily for the most part. Treatment isn't bad--I don't get bullied or anything ignorant like that. ... Mostly...

However, I want to go to a deaf school. There is one... kind of far from my house (about thirty minutes). I have told my mom time and time again but I don't know. She knows that I want to go but never really did anything to allow me to go there. I understand that with transportation and costs, that it can be difficult but there are options!

Is there a way to make sure that the school pays for the education or--I don't know. When I went to the school I went to when I was little, my mom said that the district I live in actually paid for my education. They managed how I would get to school and the school was far away, too. I want to convince her to let me go. My hearing specialist and some other teachers that I know have taught there so obviously I'm able to talk to them about going which I will do the next time I see them.

Parent placement. Go to the school and ask for a parent placement. If you meet the minimum hearing loss standards, you're in.
 
Deaf School or Deaf Community is family to Deaf signers. This person must have miss the Deaf School very much. He or she want to go back to Deaf School because of being comfortable being around Deaf students.

I miss Deaf Community, too. I had never went into Deaf School years ago. I had wished and dreamed and hoped of going into Deaf School but no, the head of the Deaf school told my mother that I am too smart to be in the Deaf School. Dang! I want to have good grades and I can not tolerate in mainstream school with no ASL and no ASL interpreters. I was not very happy to be in the mainstream school. I hate that when they won't let me be who I am as a Deaf person. :mad:

Every time I read that you were so unhappy in mainstream school and how no one would teach you ASL it breaks my heart. But I'm happy you turned out to be a strong woman who fights for Deaf rights.

Thank you. And this is part of why I want to go, really. There's pretty much a long list but this reason is probably one of the first ones on this list of mine.

I just asked my mom about it and she obviously doesn't really like the idea. She also suggested I find a club full of deaf people. I like the idea... but I can't exactly drive. I can't really go anywhere because there's my four other siblings... Not that I ever really wanted to go anywhere. :dunno:

Kind of another reason on my long long list as to why I am willing to move two hours away to Columbus, Ohio to get my education and with deaf people. Besides, I can always come home on the weekends and breaks.
 
What grade you in? I think it would be a mistake to go to a deaf school. Public school is what your life will be like. I would suggest you look for deaf friends. I kinda doubt you would qualify to go to a deaf school anyway since the only reason to go is because you want to. School district would not want to foot the bill to transfer you

If you can think for a moment about why he or she want to go into the Deaf school. You may wonder if he or she did not get the accommodations that would help him or her understand what is going on in the classroom. Having the CI is just like hearing aid and is just a tool to hear the environment sounds. He can hear with CI but could not make out what the teachers and students said. Going to Deaf school is a whole lot better than mainstream school. They have Deaf teachers, no ASL interpreters. He or she can make choice of why he or she want to go into Deaf program at the Deaf school. Every d/Deaf student are different in their hearing loss level. It is not right when you encourage him or her to stay in the mainstream school if he or she don't want to. Where is the freedom to choose what he or she want to go?

I don't like someone to tell me a big "No" that I can not go to the Deaf school. That is putting me down if I could not go to the Deaf school when I want to go. :(
 
You haven't mentioned about ASL. Do you use it or not? Deaf schools use ASL 24/7. If you are not an ASLer, how would you be able to understand a deaf teacher and students in class?

However, if you're an ASLer, then go for it. The state pays for its deaf school(s). Without CI, you are officially deaf. Am I correct?
 
It sounds like you were implanted then went to deaf school then mainstreamed successfully? It sounds like it went well back then and you have had good followup. Is there any way instead of a transfer that you could visit for a day and see and think about it further?
I do not blame you for what you see sometimes at the regular school. Even if it is not you being the target sometimes if feels like it just the same. If it is happening to you it may be better to take on the task of fixing it by staying and bringing in some help on the matter. I know then you have to talk about it. You can do that well enough I think.

Yes, visit and then think about it further.....Maybe you could still somewhat be involved somehow with activities and stuff like that....that might be fun...is this a SCHOOL or a regional program?

Can't blame you for wanting to go, as it can be very lonely being in a hearing school.

Just think about the educational differences.

Fel, what about camp? That could be a REALLY good solution, so you could meet and hang out with other dhh kids...... Are you closer to Cinncinatti (St. Ritas?)
