Training a Deaf puppy

i was recently given a deaf puppy by a family who had small children... they recently found out that the puppy was deaf..and the vet warned them about scaring and sneaking up on the dog...if he got scared he could bite or snap.......has anyone ever had a deaf puppy or trained one? i would love any suggestions..comments..help.....pls let me know of your experiences... or if anyone knows of any reading material about the subject....thanks :)
 
That is a good question since I own a Deafie dalmatian myself. A friend of mine gave Pongo to me 2 years ago and I still keep him at my mother's house until we move to a dog-friendly rental house next month.

I had no plms with Pongo and he aint that scared of noises. However make sure that there is a fenced yard or keep the puppy with another dog for companion and guide.

It works well for Pongo to run with my mother's other dogs but take him out for walks on leash and get him familiar with areas before letting him loose with the other dogs.

BTW he doesnt scare easy if I sneak up on him. Just keep ur body on his line of vision.

I am glad that you adopted deaf puppy! :) I am suppose to adopt a deaf puppy couple months ago but unforunately LandLord wont accept.. When I found out about this deaf puppy have vibrate collar..

there some info about it.. You can ask Vet how to get donate vibrate collar.. cuz it cost alot.. but worth to ask.. that deaf puppy had vibrate collar donated by Petsmart ...

My family has two dalmations. One is hearing and the other is deaf. Unfortunately, they're both gay so they're always humping each other outside... ugh!

Anyway, I've never had problem with the deaf dog. However, it has become extremely difficult to train them. I don't know exactly what to blame... but it's probably because we got both of them at the same time. We got them when they were puppies and found out that one of them was deaf a few months later when we realized that he wasn't responding to our calls. The difficult part was the training. It's difficult to train them since one is always following the other. If you try to get one dog to sit, he will look at the other and assume that he knows what he's doing so he doesn't sit. It goes the same both ways. If both are laying down and the deaf one sees the hearing one lift his ears, then the deaf one assumes that the hearing one heard something so he starts barking at the direction that the hearing one is looking. When the deaf one starts barking, then the hearing one thinks that the deaf one sees something so the hearing one starts barking too. It's hell having both of them and my parents do wish that they had only gotten one instead. Ugh!

Oh man u just reminded me of my mother's Lab/Golden mutt and oreo cocker spaniel......They were really humping each other even though both were spayed! I'm not going to be surprised if that happens to both of her Boston Terriers once the new puppy grows into a full size adult. BTW all the dogs are females except for mine (Pongo) being a boy.

Well, both of the dalmations aren't neutered. They've got huge balls dangling from behind their asses! Ugh! My brother once flicked their balls and they dragged their asses yelping in pain! Hahaha! My parents thought they would wait until later and save money so the could get them neutered later. Unfortunately, the procedure costs too much now that they are older and my parents wish they did get them neutered when they were puppies. That's what you get for putting things off! Grr!

If money is an issue they could always look into low cost spay/neuter programs.

Nah, I'd do it for free! All I gotta do is find a dull rusty steak knife and chop their balls off! SWISH!

have a night light for them, since they cant hear and in the dark they feel scared. someone told me that......
 
I think my lilo's a slective hearing ROFL :rofl: no offending anyone! ....

Peirced pixie Congrats on getting ur dog and i hope u get a successful training. keep us up to date with this :)
