A black Tibetan Mastiff, 31 inches high and answering to the name of "Yangtze River Number Two," is believed to have broken the world record as the most expensive dog after a Chinese woman paid $582,000 for the “priceless” canine.

In keeping with its record-shattering status, according to local reports the 18-month-old dog arrived at its new owner’s home in stupendously excessive style. A motorcade of 30 luxury cars cruised to the airport in Xi’an to take delivery of Yangtze. Enchanted onlookers gathered to celebrate the arrival of the city’s new resident.

If the figure of $582,000 is accurate, it makes Yangtze River Number Two possibly the most expensive pet dog in history. Earlier this year, a family in Florida paid $155,000 for a Labrador called Lancelot Encore. That price included the cost of cloning the original Lancelot.

The young millionaire, according to one report on a Chinese Web site, fell in love with the with the dog while on a breeding trip to Qinghai province. The woman, referred to only as Mrs. Wang, had been travelling to the town of Yushu with a Tibetan Mastiff that she already owned with a view to mating it with the famously pure-blooded hounds of that region.

While there though she spotted a dog known as White Root and knew immediately that she had to make it hers. Another version of the story suggests that the woman had spent some years in the quest for the perfect Tibetan Mastiff and was satisfied that the dog she found in Yushu was it.

“Gold has a price, but this Tibetan Mastiff doesn’t,” the young woman reportedly said on her return home.

It remains unclear why she renamed the dog Yangtze River Number Two, though the process appears to have taken place while Wang and her dogs were returning from the breeders.

I just got a beautiful perfect Pekingese from rescue. People should consider rescue first before buying any dog.

I stayed quiet, but I feel like I have to explain the motivation for getting a Tibetan mastiff.

Tibetan mastiff is a well-sought fighting dog, and usually people who operate dog fight rings (such as in Asian countries) breed Tibetan mastiffs for a few reasons. Not comparable to a pitbull because anyone can breed and use a pitbull. However Asatic molossers dogs are prized among the elites.

This person did not buy this as a pet. It's a status-elevating thing, and I suspect it would either be a breeding project or some other activities.

A friend of mine got a Tosa (a Korean mastiff), and he had to pay a a few thousand dollars to save the puppy from the local dogfight rings

So... I don't think this woman got it as a pet.

Just usually I raise my eyebrow when things like this get reported.

In case of the cloned Labrador, I don't see why the owners had to spend over a hundred grand on it when there are so many other dogs. However I suppose it's their choice? :dunno:

There is no real reason for a dog to be cloned other than fame and mending attachment issues.

585,000 for a DOG?! I'd rather spend $0 if I found a stray dog without a collar or tag on the street, I'd take it home.

The most I paid for a dog was $30, that is it. Most of the dogs I had were either strays or given to me free.

I don't foresee anyone paying this much money to fight the dog....but it's possible. The dog looks well taken care of and beautiful.

wow about the price! it pretty stupid about that kind of price for dog..?!?!

well....race horses cost a lot of $$ too....especially if it's a thoroughbred....seriously, I wouldn't buy a dog or a horse for that kind of $$. My Pomeranian cost me a lot, she has a lot of white fur. I've heard that all white Pomeranians cost a heck of a lot!

i know that.. but look at the dog.. that price for it? it is total off the point! it should be alot less that price! rme! oh well i know some dog can be pricey!
