Thyroid Disorders

I notice many of you have Thyroid Disorder and thought I'd start a new thread. Feel free to discuss it or ask questions.

I was diagnosed with hypo-thyroidism (underactive thyroid) in 1998. Which explains partly about my weight gain in 1997. My normal weight was 130 pounds during high school then my weight started climbing when I was in my 2nd year in college. I gained 67 pounds in 6 years. I lost 30 pounds after graduating from college in 1997, but I could not lose anymore. I was really pissed because I did everything I could to lose 37 more.

See photo below, I had a very large goiter around my neck and enlarged nodules in my thyroid glands. I had a hard time swallowing, always feeling sleepy and the lump in my neck was bothering me for 2 straight weeks. Finally, I went to see the doctor and they gave me a blood test. Sure enough I had underactive thyroid.

I went to see Endocrinologist Surgeon and we agreed that I have thyroid removed and leave particle thyroid gland (size of a thumb) in my neck to maintain my hormones.

I had a sub-total thyroidectomy (thyroid glands removed) in 1999. The operation lasted 4 1/2 hours. Originally the surgeon thought it would take only 1 1/2 hours, but I had so much stuff going on in my neck. EEK!

NOTE: Not everyone have the same problem like mine. Not everyone gets the surgery. Not everyone get tumor or cancer in thyroid. It all varies.

After the surgery and with right dose of thyroid medicene I lost 37 pounds more from '99 to '03. I was back down to 132 pounds from 197 pounds.

I am currently taking Levoxyl (T4) for 125mcg. If I don't take them I will put on enormous weight. I have my thyroid checked once a year now. It took me 2 years to get my thyroid regulated after my daughter was born (2003). It was NOT easy. I've gone though emotional roller coaster, weight loss/gain, hair, brow and eye lashes loss. That's why it's important that I take the pill daily and yes unfortunately I have to take it for the rest of my life. It used to bother me about this so much, but I'm used to it.

I remember we shared our feedback over our thyriod problems in other forum...

One thing, I´m surprised that you still take thyriod pill after surgery. Few friends of mine don´t take pill anymore after surgery... It  me... I need to know more about this thru your thread here...

Mine is .112mcg I can't even tell what color of mine is. Is it dark orange? or red? I think it is red. Anyway, you said your friend takes pink pills, which is .200mcg? Wow, that's high pretty high. When I first diagnosed with hypo-thyroidism and my doctor had to put me on .150mcg to kick start my system. Two months later my heart was racing and I was getting a lot of palpitation in the heart. My hands were trembling a lot. The doctor said ok, it is too high so let's cut back. Have you experienced that?

wow it´s different as mine...

I will be back for response more posts and tell you about myself here... I´m sure you remember my posts in other forum and other threads here, Catmandu...

yes unfortunately I have to take it for the rest of my life. 30 minutes before breakfast every morning... I´m using it...

Yes, I remember our posts very well from other forum and it was good for awhile. Thought I'd do it in here because more members here have Thyroid Disorders and it is always nice to hear more stories and experiences. They'll be happy to hear about it from you as well. :)

I take one pill every morning 1 hour before breakfast or wait 3 hours after the meal. I drink my coffee with the pill then take my shower and get dressed. By the time it's 1 hour I'd eat something. It used to annoy the heck out of me, but I'm used to it now.

What kind of surgery did they get? I had a sub-total thyroidectomy which means 95% of my thryoid glands were removed. I only have a small peice of thyroid gland that contains only 5% to function in my body and it's still not enough. So, I need Thyroid Stimulating Hormones (TSH) pill to help regulate TSH level otherwise I will suffer with severe consequences.

See your physician doctor first. Before your physician doctor get you a referral s/he will give you a blood test first then if s/he sees your test that is abnormal then s/he will get you a referral. I went through the same thing myself.

yup I agreed with you ;)

UPDATE: I went to see my Endocrinologist last Monday because it's been 1 year since my last check up. Another thing, since January I have few symptoms of low thyroid like red dry spots on my arm and leg, shed some hair even though I have so much hair, feel so tired all the time, take frequent bath so I could get warm, etc. My left wrist has been bothering me for the last two weeks now. So I needed to see her. A month ago I had my blood drawn and my level says 2.2 which is within the range, but I still do not feel normal at all. My doctor said some people feel great in this area and some feel great in another area.

I also mentioned that I have trouble conceiving. She said in order to get pregnant the level has to be 2.0 or lower. I am 2.2 right now and that's why I have trouble getting pregnant. All the frustrations and anger I've had last fall and now all made sense to me. She increased the dose for me from 112mcg to 125mcg. I'm going to wait on the pregnancy until I'm good and ready! Perhaps the end of the year or early next year. :)

I was born with under active thyroid. I started taking thyroxine tablets when I was 8 months old. For some reason it took a while to convince the doctor who thought my symptoms were just because of being born premature but mum insisted as her sister was also born with thyroid defficency. My dad even threatened to sue the stupid doctor who was not even willing to test my thyroid level. He did eventually and found I had an under active thyroid gland. At such times it is an advantage to have pushy parents.

I see more people who have hypothryoidism. For me, I had hyper-thryoidism (overactive thyroid) since 2002. It is a part of family genes (on my father's side). I remmied I eat anything unlimited and survived with too many anxiety attacks.

I have a Deaf friend who have a similiar as my hyperthyroidism. Not that many deaf women have that I notice.

Both of my thryoid glands have a bit swollen. Would be nice if it can be shrink by itself but I doubt it will not be happen.

i have underactive thyroid and i take levothyroxine .88 mg one hour on empty stomache before meal in the morning after i wake up. i was on generic in 2005 for about 3 weeks and had allergic attack from it i broke out rash it spread all over my body and i went back to my doctor and show the rashes on my body and my doctor put me BACK on levothyroxine again and it start to clear up whew and didn't have problem since so my doctor told my drug store not to change medication anymore
that i stay on levothyroxine forever
