This is for the teachers for Deaf who quitted? Why?

I read Paul Preston's "Mother Father Deaf". In it, a CODA who teached at a school for the Deaf quitted. I winced at that because the deaf kids really need teachers who are fluent in sign language. I have had some teachers who was hired but know nothing about sign language.
Could you tell me why you quitted? I don't care for personal problems. I want to hear if you opposed the teaching method or school policy, etc. I also want to hear your opinions. Thank you.
 
It is the same with interpreters who quits for some reason. This year I learned that we have only one interpreter at the Canadian Hearing Society. We really need Asl/LSQ interpreters for doctor appointments and other important events. Yeah I want to know why they quit. That puzzle me.
 
It is base on interpreter that need make living. If they don't pay enough and mean not enough food on table to kids to eat.

So they try to figure and try to input with this. About fluent sign language; it not about fluent... sometime teacher felt wasting time to teaching while the Deaf student are foolish. I have see the my science teacher at school the deaf. Teacher was fed up with one student and told student, go ahead and punch my cheek. The student actually did a great shot punch. The teacher fell and can see the hand in air and said, "Go to office!" and crawl to button get alert.

Sound scary for teacher read this one?

Anyway.. it about value teaching but sometime the teacher isn't prepare face like this. Also, some state decline the health insurance and teacher need the health insurance for some reason that cost much money.

It just many reason... I leave the job for good job because I believe that job is giving me chance good leader in future.
 
I have had an interpreter who was fired and she quit earlier than they told her to because she was immature and broke ethics, etc.

The substitute that I had replaced was going to quit eventually and return to teaching because she said that her deaf students didn't pay attention to her, so she felt like it wasn't worth her time to be an interpreter anymore. After she was with me, she wished she'd stay because I was a good student and paid attention to the interpreter.

I had one interpreter who soon after starting school eventually decided that she liked to be in more 'drama' settings like emergencies, etc. than a school.

I had another interpreter who was switched at the end of the year close to her home, but she admitted she preferred to work with kids in elementary schools.

Those are the reasons I have seen so far in my life.
 
There are less deaf people interested in teaching cuz of the new laws and the fact that oralism seems to have returned at full force and many of the deaf people who have changed their minds about teaching have told me that there would probably no jobs for them in the future if parents dont want their implanted children to learn ASL so why bother wasting years of studying for a job that they will be discriminated against anyway. That is what they have expressed to me but yes, there are still quite a few deaf educators that have stayed with their jobs for their love of teaching deaf/hh children.

I dont plan on quitting ..the day I stop teaching is the day all deaf programs stop using ASL.

Yeah I am beginning to understand what is happening in the world where we have to struggle with oralism and sign language and because of Cochlear Implant all the deaf or hearing teachers who teach ASL is giving up trying to fight with the oral authorities. It is the same with interpreters who is looking for a better job like in the big cities or just give it all up. Maybe lack of funding.

As for Ideafspy that is a good posting and that could be it when that happen. It is sad that we have struggle trying to make hearing parents and hearing oral authorities to understand that they can not take the deafness away from us. Don't do that to us deaf people. We are perfectly happy to be deaf and just want to sign because it is better with visual than trying to lipread. We have said that over and over and over many times. Can you hearing people understand that you are not deaf and never experience deafness, so don't try to fix us up with Cochlear Implant. It does not work like that at all. It is not fair when you hearing people try to make us hear over the years probably centuries if that is how long it take to make hearing people understand what we are feeling. I am not giving up the battle and I am going to keep fighting for what is our right to have the sign language. So there. I am very happy, Shel, that you are not quitting the job as a deaf teacher. All the forums that you post are superb and you are doing wonderful explaining to hearing parents, only don't give up, please!!!! PROUD TO BE :deaf:
 
Some people are unhappy or bored with their jobs. Maybe want to boost their incomes, so thboost their incomesey work somewhere else.
 
Don't plan on quitting but...

I don't plan on quitting but there is less and less students in our schools. Why? They all want to go to oral school... I should say the parents insist on them going to oral school even if the teachers don't recommend it. Having less and less children in the schools, there is less and less jobs... so I don't plan on quitting, but if I want a steady job before I am 50, I think I will have to make a choice...

Yeah I notice it here in Germany, too. More and more hearing parents implant their babies/toddlers with CI... to neglect their sign language... :(

I can't say anything about it since they have different reasons why they quit their job as teacher for the deaf.
 
Paul Preston's deaf parents Mike and Fran are fantastic, loving people. I haven't seen them in years but love them very much. Fran is blind now and before she became blind, she drew with colored chalk picture of Jesis signing love. Also of Jesus' mother Mary signing love. The last I heard, Fran is in nursing home in Ohio. I met them thru my church back in Wisconsin. Fran taught art at college in Joliet, IL and Mike was a good photographer. I never have met Paul though, but Fran and Mike were telling me that their son Paul wrote the book "Mother Father Deaf."

Look like the future of Sign Language's bleak for kids who won't be learning it until they're old enough and brave enough to learn their rightful language.

It feels like the return of Milan 1880 all over *shiver*

We must rally together to fight against people who believes Oralism's the answer and fight for our deaf kids as well our own futures.

Paul Preston was my English teacher. That is why I bought his book as I want to know more about CODAs. I never met his parents. He left my school just after my junior year. The next English teacher wasn't that good for my senior year. Bummer!
