Thinking

About 2.5 years when I start signing.

Only thing I notice is sometimes difficulties in switching between thinking ASL and English (sometimes type comes half-ASL/half-English). ASL my first language, but not native. I learn with family.

Edit - sometimes signing looks more SEE than ASL. Think parents teach more SEE.

You got sign very early, compared to most. That is an advantage. But I would wager that you don't play with ASL in the same way that a native user does.

Nope! I think not too. I sign with Deaf-of-Deaf and feel suddenly like Hearie. LOL.

That is nothing to be ashamed of. Most people who learn English first have to transition via PSE. I did, too. The trick for me was to stop trying to interpret everything as English in my mind.

I remmber one Mexican who said he had troubing signing proper ASL (or was it Mexcian sign language?) grammar cuz his brain "must Spanish"

Can't remember where I read this exactly online but it was very interesting about language. Basically one can express language in any form for language is in the brain and the mouth (or hands or pen) are just tools to express that language so whether one signs or speaks or writes, language and thoughts and concepts are still the same for it originates from the mind and thus is abstract.

Exactly. The mode of language is the symbol with which to express thought. Thought and cognition are intimately tied together. One cannot discuss one without discussing the other.

Deaf of Deaf may show a greater degree of math skills, particularly the advanced skills, because A) they have the advantage of having a native language and therefore, do not suffer the consequences of language delays that affect cognition and B) like all of the deaf who sign, they have excellent skills in pattern recognition.

My dad was very good with numbers and math and he use asked how me much is 3+ 4 when I was 4 years old . Then dad asked me how much is 4+3 and I would freeze up! I did not realize it was the same answer! I think this is one reason why learn to hate math so much!

Kids have to reach a certain stage of development before they are capable of understanding that switching the orders of the numbers does not change the problem. Take most 4 year olds: if you ask them if they would rather have three quarters or 7 nickles, they will choose 7 nickles. They aren't old enough to think the problem all the way through. That is normal for 4 year olds.

I didn't learn how to count money til high school. My friends counted my money for me in Monopoly.
still make mistakes routinely.

Deaf of Hearies here. Why this is?

Because access to langauge from the start is BIG number 1 in BSL for UK. So they have big advantage over those born to hearing parents.

That. So very true!
