I was referring to Congressmen need to change new law. It is regarding to the cochlear implant, it considers not a medical reason for the parents who make the decision on their Deaf children. Just like to replacement brown eyes to blue eyes because parents are not acceptable for who their children are.

Deaf to Hearing consider is not medical reason... My point many parents are ashame on themselves because their children are abnormal due to Deaf. They want their children to be like them as hearing status.

I feel that government needs to wake up because many Deaf children are unhappy with their cochlear implants when they become adults. They did not ask for it... It is parents !!!

No, you are correct. I was referring to the parent having automatic power of attorney to make decisions regarding treatment for life threatening conditions. In other words, the parent would not be prevented from making those decisions, but would be granted full right legally to do so.

Ok thanks for clearing that up. I must have missed some posts on that issue so I was a little confused.

Congress is not going to create a law about cochlear implants. If you feel strongly about this topic, then lobby. I will disagree with you, but that is great about this country.

For eye color - many parents have contacts for the child.

I don't know. I guess I wasn't clear about what I meant exactly and they thought i meant giving the power to the governemnt when i meant giving thepower to the parents.

some other ADers are upset with us because we have different persective. Where were we coming from? How they treat us during our childhood, etc...

Some of them prefer to stay in oral and CI users. I am very furious with schools, doctors, teachers, speech therpists, etc... they treated us in wrong method to learn how to speak. I realized, ASL is my true langague than oral. I used my hearing aids all of my life, I learn NOTHING any of words at all.... Just the sounds... It pissed me off because I wear hearing aids due to pressure by the audoloigist and teachers.

I refuse to learn how to speak again. Refuse to wearing a hearing aids..

Yea...I knew you werent all about giving the govt power to make decisions for the parents. That wouldnt be so like u so that is why I asked first. :)

I am more upset with the obsession of making us as normal as they can by putting us in very restrictive educational settings than with the implantation of children. I dont like it but I know it is none of my business..all I care is that those children have both ASL and English and be exposed to both worlds then the CI wouldnt bother me but if the attitude behind the CI was to make the child appear "less deaf" then I wouldnt like it at all.

It is terrible you had that experience. I didn't, but I respect your experiences. I just don't believe that taking away hearing aids and Cochlear implants is the answer. I don't know what the answer is.

Yes, it is terrible and why do you think some Deaf people in the Deaf community are very violently opposed to anything that makes deaf people "hearing"? People say that they are too extreme and blame it on them but maybe we should blame it on those hearing people who put us thru those kinds of bad experiences instead.
 
I know what you mean, Shel. I have a friend online, and her best friend got a CI last year, and has since been totally lambasted by her deaf friends for making the decision to get implanted. It breaks my heart to hear of people who are faced with that kind of abuse, and closed-mindedness.

I did not have those experiences. I am trying to imagine, but the hearing community has not been that way to me. I don't believe in blame on either deaf or hearing community. Place blame on the people not the community.

Right that's why I said "those" hearing people who treated us like 2nd class citizens growing up if we didnt make it on their pedestal.
