First of all, is the number behind the "-" supposed to be a negative number?

-2(x-4)(x+4) would be (-2x+8)(-2x-8), then (x=-4)(x=4)???

Yes, I knew that the number was going to be negative.
But I just worked through it, and your answer really makes sense! I will have to look at it again tomorrow, but I will for sure see if your answer works with the rest of the question.

Actually, I joined at the first time under aussiejake in March 2005, the same month as you but I was inactive for long time, and became active again in november 2006 as JClarke ....became frequent two years ago.

Today at work, we had visitors from the special ed dept and one of them asked why couldnt all of the deaf staff get CIs.

Why do many hearing people say stupid things like that? :roll:

You should just take me along as your seneschal on those days, and I would gently bite the evil people on the ankle. :)
 
Let q = number before the (x-4) and (x+4)

y = q (x-4) (x+4)

Plug in coordinate (3, 6)

6 = q (3-4) (3+4)
6 = q (-1) (7)
6 = -7 q
q = -6/7

y = -6/7 (x-4) (x+4)

Check the results:

Let x = 0
y = -6/7 (0 - 4) (0 + 4)
y = -6/7 (-4) (4)
y = 96/7

It's a parabola with vertices at (0, 13 5/7)

Consider x = -3
y = -6/7 (x - 4) (x + 4)
y = -6/7 (-3 - 4) (-3 + 4)
y = -6/7 (-7) (1)
y = 6

The parabola is symmetrical from the vertex at (3, 6) and (-3, 6).

Consider two more points:

Let x = 1
y = -6/7 (1 - 4) (1 + 4)
y = -6/7 (-3) (5)
y = 90/7

Let x = -1
y = -6/7 (-1 - 4) (-1 + 4)
y = -6/7 (-5) (3)
y = 90/7

The parabola is symmetrical around the vertex here.

He is special, and I was sincerely thinking how lucky a high school boy can ask a math question and quickly have two well educated women answer it.

And it is just from our coincidental bond of being deaf. That's neat to me.

Oi... math. I used to be really good in it, then I just took a massive brain dump and forgot all of it when I wasn't required to take any math-based courses at university.

Yes, but the technical unit was quadratics. :eek2: It is very confusing stuff! I am not a fan of math, but I am usually pretty good at it. I strongly detest quadratics. I am not a fan of algebra overall, though. :lol:

Thank you very much Sally! :) It was good of you & Shel to help me with that question. He never taught us how to do it! That is part of the reason why I reported him about a week ago. The guidance department met with me, thanked me for my positive review and professionally-written email, and told me that they were going to have a discussion with him. The biggest problem is that he doesn't tell us where to improve. He will pile on the homework, but we will never find out what it was the we did wrong. He's not the ideal math teacher. I wish you were my teacher!

So true, Botts! I appreciate having AllDeaf as not only a place for my own enjoyment, but also as a resource. I appreciate that two qualified teachers, Shel & Sally, were willing to answer my question on their own time. :)

It is pretty neat isn't it? The Internet is a great thing.
