i know each year the laws change, for what must be captioned in TV, for instance, 2008 everything,

i thought that by 2004 all major sporting events had to be captioned, its 2005 now right, so whats this, NFC championship game and no captioned, on FOX no less

grrr

is this just a local bummer for me or for everyone? im in Virginia Fox Channel 5

we are watching right now.. its captioned.. please check your tv.. and menu..
hope yours working.. :)

Hmm ..Im watching the game right now and it is in CC.

Go Patriots! (cant wait for the second game)

nothing wrong with my TV, its the same everywhere in the house

anyone in the east coast area near VA, could just be my broadcaster Adelphia, but other channels have captions, just this game

Maybe you bought a japaneese TV made by sony!

It is YOUR fault because you gave a TV sony for him.... What a cheap of you? :nono:

Eh? My son Markus is watching the playoffs and it does have caption. Maybe you did not turn the caption on or maybe bad cable service. :dunno:

Can anyone clarify for me where the captioning is actually done? Is it by the local station or the network? I've had 2 TV's on at the same time on two different stations carrying the same network show (Fox in Washington and Fox in Baltimore) and occasion it seems the two captions are different but mostly they are appear to be the same.

There were closed captioned on tv for both games today and tonight. I watched both games.

Good Luck for Eagles and Patroits on Super Bowl!

The captioning for nationally broadcasted shows done my the networks. But sometimes, there are problems. When I was dating this girl from Indiana, sometimes, for some reason, her local TV station's captioning of nationally broadcasted stations didn't work. I know she sent out alot of emails, and found out it was something to do with...I forgot if it was the local station or DishNetwork.

Locally broadcasted stuff is done by the stations. There are 2 ways that I know it is done. 1st way is by teleprompter. This gives you what the anchors are saying, but doesn't give you live interviews and live field reports. Some stations offer the taped field reports and some don't. They better way, in my opinion, is when they type it in as it is said. A good CC person will be very accurate and not missing much and spelling most things right. On the other hand, you get the terrible ones that mispell and miss alot. That happens alot on the weekend news here in the Providence area on the NBC affiliate.

Hope I answered your questions...and I hope i didn't give any wrong info.

Matt,
Thanks for the clarification. Kind of makes sense. When Ice mentioned no captioning, I immediately checked and it was working here..both on cable and 'airwaves'. Perhaps it was something to the local cable company or station then. Thanks again for clarifying.

I just remembered that couple years ago... it happened to me.. no captioned all day on all channels.. i was like uh? I thought something wrong with my CC box.. lucky enough before i almost threw it away and get new one.. I called Local Cable co..and explained the situation.. they checked everywhere and said.. oh we are sorry, we just turn it on.. we had maintence this morning and forgot to turn that on..
next time if good shows with no captioned.. and you are on cable service or directtv or etc... call them..

:)

Captioning is done at the source (in this case the networks) usually handled by a Third Party like Viacom or CaptionMax or Captions Colorado.

The problem with "some get captions and some don't" is usually a local issue. It's up to each broadcaster in the link to be sure they relay the caption signal and not strip it out. One Example of the chain is Networks -> Local Affiliate -> Cable Co -> You.
The FCC encourages when you make a Captions complaint you work your way up the chain (from the You end) especiallly since the problem is likely to be local.
Until they fixed it, the "News at 11" and Storm Watch scrolllers caused the Captions to go away on my local CBS Affiliate.
