Do you get your dogs teeth cleaned at the vet? Do they put your dog to sleep?
If so how often do you get this done?

I take Marley twice a year, but I don't like that they have to put her to sleep. I brush her teeth regularly at home, is this enough????

people never brush their dogs teeth when I was a kid and the dogs lived a good long life.

I feed dog biscuits and treated rawhides for cleaning and always get compliments from the vet on how great my dog's teeth are.

In the recent past both our older dogs were put under for cancer surgery, and that went well and has extended their lives, but I would not put a dog under for standard teeth cleaning.

If they were very old and needed an extraction , then yes, but usually the risks outweigh the benefit. Anesthesia can be pretty dangerous for little dogs.

Botti thanks for this information. I do everything possible to keep Marley healthy. I think putting her to sleep is too dangerous too. She eats the dental treats and I brush her teeth so I am sure she is fine.

I only do so if my dog snuck off to investigate trash or drink from the toilet. Like Botts said, calcium biscuits or treated treats generally covers it. If you are still concerened, seek your vet's advice.

I give my baby lots of dog biscuits too...and she has her toothbrush and paste in the bathroom. She hates it when I brush her teeth tho'.

She'll be 6 in July and her breath still smells nice!...:giggle:...I outta' know, as she does give me lots of kisses....even washes my face in the early AM....

My little doggie definitely has morning breath but so do I so I guess we are even:)

Teeth cleaning at the vet's - called a "dental" - is an operation generally requiring anesthesia and ideally bloodwork before the procedure so they know if there's anything that can affect the operation. A dental is a significant procedure. Kibble does not clean teeth - that's a myth. I have raw dogs and have not brushed teeth in many years. For people whose dogs do not eat raw and/or require dental work - a lot of toy breeds still have mouth problems - a dental may be done once or twice a year.

I try to take my dog to vet once a day for dental cleaning. Otherwise I do brush her and scrapes tartar/plaque off her teeth if needed--she is very cooperative with me, only me. :)

She also loves to eat her C.E.T. oral chews :)

I don't at all! Never had teeth problems in all 5 dogs (basset hounds) I had while growing up, current dog Boris (jack Russell) eats RAW meals, chews everything that's edible to him (wood, plastics, etc don't ask!) he doesn't like raw hides etc. he loves raw chicken wings, he only gets this occasionally (when I have roast chicken! I remove the wings before the chicken goes in the oven) Vet had to ask me twice how old he was!! He's coming up 7 and still have puppy soft coat and pearly white teeth.
