Teen prostitutes rescued, pimps held, in FBI sweep

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Seventy-nine teenagers held against their will and forced into prostitution were rescued at hotels, truck stops and storefronts in a three-day sweep of sex-trafficking rings across the United States, law enforcement officials said on Monday.

The FBI said 104 alleged pimps were arrested during sting operations in 57 U.S. cities including Atlanta, Sacramento, and Toledo, Ohio. The operation lasted between Thursday and Saturday and involved state and local authorities as well as the FBI.

The teenagers, aged from 13 to 17 years old, were being held in custody until they could be placed with child welfare organizations. They were all U.S. citizens and included 77 girls and two boys, the FBI said.

One of the minors recovered in the sweep reported being involved in prostitution from the age of 11, according to Kevin Perkins, acting executive assistant director of the FBI's Criminal, Cyber, Response and Services Branch.

He said the cases were not "one-off" incidents, but evidence of "criminal enterprises" that lure minors in, often through social media, hold them against their will through threats to them or their families, and then traffic them through different U.S. cities.

Child prostitution is "a problem that happens in all kinds of American cities and it happens to American kids," said Ernie Allen, president of the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

"People in this country believe it is only a problem that happens somewhere else," he said.

He estimated that at least 100,000 minors were victims of child prostitution and trafficking each year but said assessments were hampered due to under-reporting and other data complications.

The crackdown last week is part of a broader initiative launched in 2003 to combat child-sex trafficking, resulting in five other sweeps since 2008.

To date about 2,200 children have been rescued in the program, the FBI said, adding that its figures do not take into account children recovered by other state and local investigations.

Even though the FBI says 79 children were rescued, officials said there's no guarantee those minors won't be lured back into prostitution.

I would never sell myself, do not care how hungry I was, the only thing I can think of is 100% no self-esteem and a thought of no options make for prostitution but there are so many places a woman can get help. Pimps also protect prostitutes. Too many weirdos out on the streets. They make sure they're around so prostitutes wont get hurt or robbed. A lot of prostitutes are in the business just b/c of money. I do know that hookers hire their own pimps. That is why it's dangerous to be with a hooker b/c pimps are close by with guns and shit.

Was watching a segment on Investigative ID awhile back...these "pimps" would recruit high school girls from their schools and middle-school also. Some of these girls were actually kidnapped and forced into prostitution/slavery.....Finally one girl did manage to get loose and found a Police officer to listen to her story....and the Police finally raided that house and found 5 girls there chained up....

It's horrific!...and if I had a daughter I would make sure I knew where she was at all times. Just can't imagine the horror these teenage girls went thru!

I agree with you! I knew a girl that was kidnap by a pimp and she was so lucky to been able escape with the help of a John' who felt bad when he heard she been kidnap and was being forced into having sex with strange older men. The pimp showed the girl what happen to her if she did not do as say. Another girl had her vagina cut with a razor blade in front of the teenage girl I knew. She was kidnap right near her high school . This teenage girl was scared for her life and only wanted to get back home alive! actually pimps do have sex with the hookers. many pimps prowl bus stations looking for young runaways. pimps start having sex with the the new girl to "break 'em in" and teach them how to be better lovers to their johns. pimps also get them hooked on drugs herion and meth to make them dependant on the pimp for their supply.
