I have been given an assignment to get a tty for our business. I've done a little research and it seems that tty's are, for the most part, passe'. Wondering what the latest corporate deaf communication tools are most popular with deaf folks?

The bad thing about tty's (at least from my perspective,) is that they are singular and need to sit one spot. This is fine if only one person needs to use it. Our business relies on call center operations. What I'd REALLY like to do is make all of our agents able to interact with a deaf caller on the fly. Looking for something (software) that can be deployed to all agents. Problem, so far, is the research I've done shows that an audio card/modem set up must exist on each pc. We have about 200 agents and NONE of our pc's have modem cards. Is there a USB solution out there? Also, we'll be going to a VoIP telephone system by the end of the year. Any suggestions for deaf communication products for a VoIP system?

Thanks everyone!

Since this is for a business, I'm guessing that you use a pbx system.

I googled "tty compatible pbx software" and got some hits. Hope that helps.

ETA: Googling "tty compatible voip software" gets some hits also. When you come up with the solution you decide to use, I hope you share! :)

ETA2: I reread your post. I don't see why one PC couldn't be set up as a telecommunications server, and than all the other PCs networked to that server could share the modem. However, I admit I have never set up or supported a WAN.

Qwerty, what about all the folks that don't know sign. Aren't TTYs a good solution for them? And the nice thing about TTYs (old fashioned or virtual) is that you can print out the conversation which is very handy if you have a dispute with a business and need proof. I've done that, and have been very glad to have that option.

Just a thought, why not contact one of VP company and see if they got any ideas? Maybe set up a number and then VP can call your company. That way everybody can communicate?

My favorite option to contact companies are the chat options on websites.
