MARIANNA, Fla. -- A Florida middle school teacher has been suspended after students said he used a racial epithet directed at presidential candidate Barack Obama.

Seventh-grade social studies teacher Greg Howard reportedly wrote the word CHANGE as an acronym on the board and wrote an expletive with the letter 'N.' The phrase he wrote has alternately be reported as "Can You Help A (expletive) Get Elected" and "Come Help A (expletive) Get Elected."

The incident happened last Friday at Marianna Middle School.

The Jackson County School Board said Friday that Howard has been suspended without pay for 10 days and will be transferred to the Jackson County Adult Education program. He is also required to submit a letter of apology to his students and attend diversity and sensitivity training.

Marianna is near Florida's border both with Alabama and Georgia.

That is stupid thing to do. SMH

Yea, that was stupid of the teacher. Glad to see that he got suspended for it.

I bet it was a class full of white students or he wouldn't have done that. I am glad someone reported him knowing they have morals than the teacher. That's outright nasty. Glad the students and school took action. What an immature weirdo. I would have him tested for alcohol or drugs because it just seems so unreal. What a stupid thing to do, but it shows the true colors that people are unwilling to get past this same old crap with racism .

Personally, I think his license to teach needs to be revoked. No benefit in exposing children to bigotry.

Exactly.

How do we know that this particular teacher isn't stereotyping the students of color or holding them back?

Teachers all together need to keep opinions to themselves and not to express who and why they will vote for this or that person in a political race

I agree with the above statements. This teacher should not be allowed to teach again and he needs to be charged for hate crime. Teaching our youngsters to hate because of skin color is outright wrong!

Hopefully these youngsters will not take his word for it. Who knows how many minds he may have influenced

Children trust teachers to teach and many will take their word for it. So all of the political views should be kept to themselves.

Gee, what did he eat for breakfast? I doubt diversity and sensitivity training will change his manners.

What if that teacher is african-american, it is ok for him to call his own race a ni99er, and the whole situation would be much different.

No, it would not be any different at all. And using that word is not okay.

He should be fired, not suspended for influencing racism against Blacks. There is no room for bigotry in school.

Yep, I agree. This teacher needs to be kicked to the curb. My students asked me who I will vote for and I got a little hestistant cuz I wasnt sure if I should answer cuz of the neutrality policies that we, teachers, must follow (and I agree with them) so I told them that I hadnt made up my mind. Play it safe.

Yikes! What was he thinking? Get rid of him.

Personally, I wouldn't want any teacher of my children to show political beliefs either way (left or right). Teachers should teach fact and not beliefs. Politics do not belong in our schools, and if a teacher is pushing Pro-Obama or Pro-McCain (or Anti-either) they should be dismissed. I guess it's also like 'religion' in schools..... I remember my highschool got in trouble because they had a christmas tree, and apparently some group was upset about it because we had a walkout my senior year (we'd use any excuse to take off the day from school, but if someone was saying we couldn't have our christmas tree, it made us more upset).
