Tax Credits for Hearing Aids

If kim purchased them through a hearing aid dealer, I can see them costing that much, but not through an audi. That seems very expensive to me. Even my Oticon DigiFocus II super power BTEs weren't that expensive and they were considered top of the line aids when they were purchased in 1995.

In 1995 Hearing aids were much cheaper too not saying they werent a lot of money but I can see where hearing aids and service would cost a little more nearly 15 years later. Now, there is a little more technology that comes along with digital aids. I would think if you purchase them through the audi it would be more money because you are also purchasing the service. I got mine through my audi and with the price of the hearing aids comes check up, any amount of hearing tests I want, cleanings and so fourth through the lifetime of my aids...

CBE,

Actually, purchasing hearing aids through a dealer is more expensive than an audi because their main purpose is to sell a hearing aid. Audis aren't under the same pressure to sell hearing aids since they have a steady stream of patients that they can see unlike hearing aid dealers.

On Topic

I appealed to those sponsoring the bill to change the bill to include those of us who are not dependents and are under 55.

FYI – the most recent version of the bill in the Senate (S. 1019) has been reintroduced to include people of all ages.
The bill provides a $500 tax credit per hearing aid every five years – for all persons purchasing a hearing aid. This legislation is getting more attention than ever and would benefit to the members of this community.

Please write your Senators and Representatives!

We have this in ontario but it's called Assistive Devices Program and it includs almost all assistive devices...including hearing aids...i get 500 for each aid i believe

Luckily Adam is covered by the state's medical program he can get new aids every 5 years, unless he needs an new script (like that power aid we're discussing) and when the adoption is finalled I can negotiate new hearing aids in that... but I remember patients using their credit cards to charge $5000 and more for their HA's when I worked for ENT/Audi...

It's not like you can get 'hearing insurance' like vision or dental plans thru your employer... but hey... maybe that would be a good idea?? Why isn't that an option?? Instead of a whopping $500 tax break???

With the focus on health care in Washington this is perhaps the best time to make our voice heard in support of tax credits for hearing aids. Current legislation before Congress provides up to $1000 for two hearing aids for dependents and adults 55+. One in four households in America has at least one person with a hearing loss and 2/3 cannot afford hearing health care. If we all wrote to all our Facebook contacts and all our email contacts and all our discussion forum contacts then I bet we can make a difference. We need 500,000 letters to Congress....that's only 167,000 people (2 letters to our Senators and 1 letter to our Congress person). So let's tap into our social networks and make this happen.

Someone may have already asked but ... Is this in addition to the benefit a person can get through VRS or instead of?

If additional it would help a lot but if it is instead of then it will be less of a benefit.

Insurance Companies

It really ticks me off that Insurance companies will not pay for hearing aids. In my humble opinion, that is discrimination due to disability. They pay for glasses, part of lasik surgery and such...why won't they touch Hearing Aids.

I would love to sue.... just get me a good lawyer.
