Taunton second-grader suspended over drawing of Jesus

Taunton Public Schools Response To Recent Allegations - Boston News Story - WCVB Boston

It has been reported in the media that a student was suspended over drawing a rendering of Jesus Christ on the cross. This report is totally inaccurate, and the student was never suspended. This incident occurred nearly two weeks ago, it was handled appropriately, and the school staff and family had been working together in a cooperative and positive manner.

The drawing published in various media outlets is not the same drawing that was discovered by the teacher. It has not been established whether the drawing was actually completed in school. Contrary to what has been reported, there was no request or assignment by the teacher for students to sketch something that reminded them of Christmas or any religious holiday.

The inaccuracies in the original media story have resulted in a great deal of criticism and scrutiny of the system that is unwarranted.

I read that too, but no doubt that the boy was sent home for psychological evaluation, that's where I felt was wrong. And that is like suspending in a way. Plus someone mentions that other kids were drawing other pictures.

I know that the teacher would ask the kids to draw whatever they wanted during beginning of the month of Dec when everyone is thinking of Christmas.

It may or may not be the same picture, but it proves that a religious picture would get people jumping into conclusion thinking "oh he is obsess with death" without realizing the possibility that he share the same faith and love for Christ as adults do.

btw, the father thinks it is a race issue as well and thinks the school think his child is a problem child.

Oh my gosh! She is the BITCH!!!! She don't know what is CHRISTmas mean. The Jesus Christ was born in Christmas Day. I am feeling sorry for boy. I think the teacher is anti-christ.

Glad I live in Canada.

I would had been expelled for my drawings at his age. And no,they weren't religious in nature.

Notice that even when the school clarified and said it is not true, the looney right wing religious nuts still believe there's a conspiracy to get rid of Jesus from public schools.

I suspect that the article is a hoax set up by a religious freak to make it sound like we're destroying Christianity.

It sounds like we don't know the whole story. Some kids have problems and need help. Referrals to counselors aren't made without any basis. Services are seriously under used in public schools. The kids referred at our local elementary are serious discipline problems. The school is protecting the child's privacy and it would be better if the parents protected the child's privacy, too.

There seems to be two extremes in this thread. There is no happy medium. Most of the schools up here have that happy medium. You believe what you want and express it how you want. The public schools are very accepting.

They dont like to see for what they dont believe in like Jesus during the Christmas holiday, TOUGH! there are still plenty of other religion related holidays they can celebrate...I dont hear us christians complaining abt them celelbrating their holidays when it has nothing to do with Jesus or God or whatever but they do with us? Interesting...talk aobut selfishness.

They dont respect our holiday, then they can go back where they came from. Besides, its not just about religion its about love and sharing and spending time with friends and families.

The father is the one seeking publicity. Why am I reminded of Balloon Boy?

Why do I smell xenophobia?

Most of the movement of secularism and atheism come from white hard-working middle-class Americans.

They should have taken the child to a counselor. That counselor is the one that is certified to say "yea or nay this child does have issues".

The whole hallabaloo with the school system, could be partly due to the fear that they will be another Columbine.

Another part is religion, the school has to walk on eggshells now around that issue. If they don't say anything about the picture some advocates against it would be insulted and an outcry would be heard that the school is stomping on their rights.

and another is : Could it be that the Father overreacted and "exaggerated" the issue?

A lot of parents will do that. They get outraged over some small thing and blow it out of proportion, the intention all the while is to have people stand at his back and point the finger at the "culprits" responsible for whatever they did wrong if any.

They really need to find a better system to go about this. If the school cares so much about the child and the education of a child and is geared to helping that child make it in the real world by teaching the child everything he or she needs to know, then the way they reacted only just traumatized the child.

What is sad about all this is that little boy. He is stuck in the middle. He has the school in one corner, his father in another, the media in the third corner, and the outcry of the public in the forth.

Did anyone try to talk to the young boy? Be his advocate and stand at his side?

Thanks for pointing that out. I did read her post and understand what was said.

I simply stated my views :)

On the other hand. Why did inaccurate information come out?

These days it's harder and harder to believe in anything that you hear or read.

My experience with children suggests virtually every child goes through a morbid stage. It is part of their growing up. Some go through it at different ages, but as a rule it has no significance except it shocks most adults who are too senile to remember having gone through the same stage themselves.

I remember going through a pirate stage. My drawings were horrible. Come to think of it they were horrible. Maybe my teacher thought it was a picture of a cat playing with a ball of string.
