Surgery tomorrow!

that is cute!! Oh I heard the worst worst sound today!!!! My students cracking their hands. One started and then several did it. I told them to stop and if not I was going to bang my head on the table.

I was in a faculty meeting today and a cell phone when off. I did said why is a cell phone going off. I guess I spoke too loud and the Principal stated cell phones are not allowed in the meeting. I think I was just shocked that I heard it. So many sounds are new or causing my brain to "wake up."

Oh, I tried everything to get that "junk" out of my hair. I found that shampoo for oily hair was the best.

Going for the next mapping on Friday. I hope I can handle the increase in high sounds. I wake up each morning so excited to hear. I don't do the screaming(oh I might), but I enjoy the new day of sounds.

I had to laugh at your post Vallee. People use to complain about my husband grinding his teeth and I would feel puzzled at why they would have a reaction. Now that I can hear it, it's not a nice sound LOL! Now I've joined the chorus asking him to stop that.

Good luck with your new map on Friday. Do you have both done in the same session?

I really enjoy reading all of these. It helps so much to listen and read all the experiences. I also glad to see everyone doing well with surgery. An interesting thing happen last night. I was talking to my husband(been married 18 years). I got up to put in my speech processor to understand more and he said why don't you still hear like you use too. I said no I lost about 50% of that residual hearing. He was shocked and did not realize it. I told him after 35 years of being HOH I'm good at lip reading and adjusting to life with and without sound. It was a shock to him that even without the processor I could still communicate. I enjoy using the CI because as he only has to say things once. The talks go quicker. And I get the jokes the first time unless he is being silly(99% of the time).

I agree, I use to spend hours hunting down stories like this. It is great. I think if I went blindly in getting the implant that I would have been much more nervous if I didn't have this to come back to or at least loaded up on xanax lol...

I guess some people don't realize that we can adapt to another way of communicating. That is an interesting thought though.

I use to crack my knuckles all the time but not anymore. I don't even hear them. I have a silly question. I never got the whole "nails on the chalkboard" sound where everyone is like running for the hills and i'm standing there with the biggest question mark on my forehead. Can you hear that with the CI to go running for the hills or no? I figure since you are a teacher Vallee you can find out in a jiffy :)

R2D2, you can hear your husband teeth grind? Wow, I didn't even know that they produced such a sound.

I found my magnet in my head today. I was going to use a needle and a thread if I couldn't find it to track it down on my head but I didn't need to do that. It was liberating. :)

I will ask my class to do the nails on the chalkboard. Let you know later!

The magnet don't worry about it. It seems the speech processor is drawn to it so it moves into place easy. It takes a few days. Mine gives a loud almost water drop sound when it is near.

Hi contradica,

Yes, I can really hear the sound of grinding teeth now and understand why people find it gross.

Don't worry about the magnet thing - in the beginning I wondered if maybe they forgot to put in the implant during surgery because I couldn't make anything stick! It turns out I just had thick hair. You have long hair don't you? I needed a number 5 magnet in the coil, which is the strongest in Cochlear's range.

This grinding teeth business just prompted me to ask my mom what is the most annoying sound to her. She promptly let me have it. She hates when I forget to turn my hearing aid off and it sits there whistling forever, dripping water, and nails on a chalkboard. I think I am going to do a mass mailing at work and ask as a hypothetical question of what would be the first thing they want to hear and the most annoying noise that they can imagine. How are you feeling today? I think today is Friday for you right? You get to go for your checkup! :)

Amazing, some hair you have! I just use a #2...but then again I have very short hair. ;) I suspect I would have some serious skin problems with a magnet that strong on me.

Ha ha, Me too sr117soars! I wear a #1 magnet and my hair is short and very fine.

My check up went great. Everything looks good :) The GP cleaned up the area and then put some new steristrips in place. He asked me to see him again in a week so that it can be checked again.

Heh I could never figure why people got so upset about feedback from a hearing aid! At least we don't have to worry about that now.
Now with a CI, I can hear high frequency sounds so much better and things like beeps etc. really make you jump, like "oh! what was that?"

How are you going with the waiting? Are you beginning to get impatient now for the switch on?

Woo!! Is it all closed up now? Does that mean the steristrips comes off and you are free as a bird from that point on?

I never got it either :) I use to put it in one of those air tight glass containers, it think they are called humidors, it would wake my mom up from a sound sleep if I didn't turn it off completely. Super hearing mom apparently.

I lack in the high frequencies. Does that include sounds of an air conditioner and stuff like that? I was trying to find something online besides audiogram to tell me what sounds belong to what frequency.

So far I am doing pretty well. I'm trying to keep myself busy. Last week when I went back to work, even though it was just 3 days, it dragged. Normally it flies. I'm getting myself ready for the rehab part. Yesterday, I just brought computer speakers since I threw mine out and headphones so I can listen to the audio books and the online rehab.

What about you? Is it easier this time around or harder waiting for activation?

That's right! They did advise when the steristrips come off to rub some sorbelene cream on it from time to time to help promote further healing and to prevent chaffing with the speech processor.

Yes, I didn't realise how many things beeped until I got my CI. For example, when you leave the handbrake of the car applied accidently when driving off, I now hear this very intense beep that makes me grab the handbrake ASAP just to stop the beep. When driving underneath the road toll scanners, I now hear a series of beeps which mean different things. For example if you get 3 beeps, your toll account is low and you need to top it up with your credit card. LOL maybe sometimes its better not to hear the beeps!

Cool - it sounds like you will have a lot of fun. I still have my children's story audio books from last time. It's a great benchmarking process to see how your hearing chances from activation onwards.

What about you? Is it easier this time around or harder waiting for activation?

Easier. Last time around I was aware that possibly I might be one of those for whom the CI doesn't work well so I wasn't sure how it would all sound or go. Now that I have my other ear already up and running I feel much more relaxed and go with the flow.

How are you going contradica - not long until switch on now! I got my steristrips removed today! I'm looking forward to washing my hair at last.

I've been pretty busy in the past few days as I have another part time job now, working at a school in their finance section. I've been really enjoying it but boy schools are noisy places LOL!

Hello R2D2, I'm doing pretty good. My incision is healed and I am applying Vitamin E oil on it every night. You haven't been able to wash your hair this entire time? I was bitching about one week :ugh3:

My only problem that I have right now is that the tinnitus is back and I can't tell which side is causing it. I've sent up a tent at Camp Unhappy now. Those two weeks of bliss was wonderful and only to have it come back :( I'm wondering if it is my unimplanted side that has been causing a problem all along. It is kind of dampening my spirit for activation.

What time is your appointment again on Monday? Some faint memory tells me it is at 9:30 but I want to make sure :)

LOL fortunately I don't have an oily hair problem so it wasn't too bad or smelly after 2 weeks.

Sorry to hear the tinnitus has returned. It's probably because it's quiet for you at the moment while you are waiting for the CI to be activated - tinnitus breeds in quietness. There is a good chance that the CI once activated, will improve it for you in the long term. I saw some research in pubmed the other day that said that in about 60% of cases, tinnitus improved in the other unimplanted ear as well when there is bilateral tinnitus. We are 14 hours ahead of you I think so 9:30am our time on 18th September is going to be 7.30pm on the 17th September your time. What time is your activation again?

My activation is at 3:30pm. That means by the time I get home from my activation, you will be just starting yours!! We should have some very interesting posts to look forward to tomorrow :fingersx: I am wishing you the best of luck R2D2, you have been a tremendous amount of motivation for me.

Are you getting excited? I am. :) :dance2: I don't know how I am going to keep myself together for the first half at work tomorrow!! How does one just nonchalantly go about their day when they know they will become a fully functional cyborg before dinner time? :laugh2:

Good luck on your activation on my third wedding anniversary on September 18!

Yes! I am pretty excited about it and look forward to reading your first impressions, LOL. I hope it goes wonderfully well for you and don't forget to keep your expectations low to begin with but with the expectancy of seeing improvements pretty quickly. For me, though it was an immediate improvement because it wasn't painful to hear anymore. Will you be bringing your camera with you? I have a little Canon with a movie function and will use that. Last time, I burst out laughing at the very moment of switch on because it sounded so terrible. Luckily I had been warned!

I will be doing the reverse of you, getting activated and then going from the clinic to work at the school.
