Surgeon's report

hmmm. i sent my ci audi an e-mail several days ago asking for copies of my audiological and surgical reports, but haven't heard back from her which is unsual. now i'm starting to think that they won't give them to me. i just sent her another request via e-mail and hope she will respond to that.

I hope she answers.

I have experienced two audies who tend to not respond as unusually.

I would give the receptionist a message if you get no response. I believe you have rights to your medical records. I mean, it's yours.

That is true. I have copies of all my audi testing, the results of my bloodwork (DNA) and the results of my CT and MRI scans. Plus an x-ray from surgery. All I had to do was ask for them. And that was from different offices, so it was not just a one time thing.

i'll give the receptionist a call sometime tomorrow.

i wonder why my ci audi and surgeon didn't give all of that information to me the first time around?

There might also be fewer recipients, but that might not be a bad thing.

true. my ci center only implants 7 patients a year. they're the largest ci center in the midwest yet they don't implant as many people as you might think for a center of their size.

Faire Jour,

You know you have experienced a lot in life and you know life is full of decisions. By not making a choice, that in itself is a choice. You took all the information available to you and made a choice. The best one you knew how to make at the time.

Having experienced the life altering CI surgery myself, both my wife and I without hesitation would make the same decision for either of our daughters if they loose their hearing while they are under our roof.

Although your daughter may have turned to locate the loud noise "your clapping" prior to the surgery, you can hope that after she learns to use the CI, she will be able to answer your questions without having to turn and look.

Learning to use the CI will probably be a fairly long road for your family and your daughter because of her age but if she comes around like so many other youngsters have on this site, you may say you would do it again in a heart beat.

Do keep us all posted as to her progress.
I didn't see the activation date in this posting. Is it coming soon?

She has been activated for a week now. She is really doing well. She is already hearing as well as she was with her hearing aids. I do not doubt that this was the right choice. I was just so surprised. She told me today that she already hears more with the implant than her hearing aid. I'm so proud of her!

It is illegal for her to not give copies of your records within a reasonable period of time.

that's what i thought. the ci audi i'm working with now is different than the audi i had before.

however, i'm surprised that my former audi didn't automatically give me my medical records.

I think some doctors don't give you copies for some reason. I guess they are not legally required to make copies everytime unless the patient requests it.

I hate when there are so many rules. Patients should always have copies of tests and reports given to them. Sometimes you don't know what the doctors have in their files and you forget what was done to you in case you switch doctors.

I had my current audie given my CI records, and I found out she didn't have my recent audiogram. I don't even know how much of the records she got from the previous hospital. She just tells me she got them until I found out she didn't have my recent audiogram, so I am not sure she got everything.

hi everyone,

i heard from my ci audi who told me to contact the medical records department regarding copies of my audiological and surgical reports. the department called me this morning and will be mailing out a release form that i am supposed to sign and mail back.

Good news.

Right! I remember that you have to go through the medical records department for that information then they make you sign. Well, glad you got it!

Well, that is progress Hear Again. Glad they got back to you so quickly.

jillio, clearsky and etalton,

thanks! :)

i'm really interested in knowing what the reports say particularly because i'm concerned about anethesia that was used for both surgeries that caused a manic episode. anethesia induces mania in people with bipolar, so it's not surprising that this happened to me.

however, i'd still like to know what types of anethesia were used so that i can avoid them in the future if possible.

speaking of which, two different types of anethesia were used for each of my surgeries. the first one made me extremely tired while the second one didn't.

there were also differences in the way i was put to sleep. for my first surgery, i was given an iv with a sedative that put me to sleep before being wheeled to the or (at my request since i have fears about or's given my childhood surgeries). for my second surgery the surgeon placed a mask over my nose and asked me to breathe deeply while counting backwards from 100. also, for my second surgery (for whatever reason) i was not put to sleep before i was wheeled into the or.

Agreed. I think they should have onboard a certified psychologist or psychiatrist as part of the CI candidacy team.
Amen! I have no beef whatsoever with implanting people who are right off the bat canidates or who have severe recruitment or tintinuas.
I do think that some people are almost "brand name" shopping....This isn't exclusive to audilogy. For example, remember when ADD started to become a "trendy" dx? (oh wittle Smashlie isn't a brat she just has ADD) or...I was reading an article in the paper about people who go see doctors at name brand hoispitals for really routine care that they could get at their local medical center.
I think that they should tighten implantation criteria over the implant centers, so that while it would be easy to get a CI if you really honestly NEEDED one, there would also be a way to weed out the people who are beyond convinced that they need the latest BEST equiptment ever.

I don't know who you hang out with! I have never met anyone who views it that way. I do not think that CI's are being "over prescribed".
