I read the news about this situation.
Mojave cross at center of court fight reported stolen - CNN.com
Not surprised but I believe that display of cross on public area violates separation of state and church, despite about conservative judges said it wasn't. I'm one of person that's forced to converted to Christian because of my families and that's not okay to take my belief away that based on agnostic or atheist. Now, I'm considering about convert back to agnostic or atheist.
It was the veterans who swore the oath to the Constitution put up the cross to honor the soldiers who died for our country, freedom, and constitution.
I know but why it is necessary to be on public land?
If it is private land so I could careless and they are free to do it.
I found an ironic about all US soldiers are supposed to be Christian because of cross displayed to honor the veterans.
I edited my post above so please take some part of my post out because it has nothing with topic.
To each their own, man. In World War 2, the men who got killed and buried in the foreign territory always put up the crosses, those soldiers were the Government Issues and able to put up the crosses (Star of David if they were Jews) without any problems.
As for the cross on Mojave Desert, I have no problem with it and punish to those thiefs who disgraced to the fallen soldiers!
Ok, WW2 era, US was homogeneous Christian country and there weren't an issue until wake of separation of state and church in late 20th Century (after 1960's).
Yeah, it was, unfortunately.
Honestly, a war memorial cross passively standing on a rock in a remote desert area is going to force you (or anyone) to convert to Christianity?I read the news about this situation.

The cross memorial does not mean that "all US soldiers are supposed to be Christian."...I found an ironic about all US soldiers are supposed to be Christian because of cross displayed to honor the veterans....
Vandals tore down the 76 year-old Mojave Cross just days after the Supreme Court ruled that the religious symbol could remain atop Sunrise Rock. They have no right to do this.

Vandals never have the right to do what they do. That is why it is called "vandalism".

The cross is a traditional grave marker for American military graves unless otherwise requested. If a veteran or the family doesn't want a cross marker they can get something else of equivalent value (there is a $ limit). Most of the military markers issued now are flat bronze plaques because modern cemeteries prefer them.
My atheist veteran father has a cross on his VA provided grave marker; it was approved by his mother, also an atheist. No one was compelled to convert to Christianity by looking at it.
