This thread isnt necessarily meant to be mean - but its a place where you can put the stupid, mean or just plain odd things non-deafies have said.

I'll start off:
Are you deaf or what?

Can you not hear yourself?

Feel free to add your own!

"She is death" I had to remind them, I am deaf with an "F" not in th, but to correct them saying I am hard-of-hearing, not death.

Can you drive?

Can you read my lips?

Can you read and write?

*Shouting at you , "can you hear me?"

"Can deaf people have sex?"

"Wow! Deaf people go to bars!"-my hubby said that when he first met my former roommates at a bar.

facing me and talk to me so slowlyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy. Geez talk normal will ya??

YOU are responsible for bringing your own interpreter! (Like at a doctor's office...)

You're so lucky your three year old daughter can hear - she can help you so much!

As a hearie the one I dislike (very much) is not so much a saying but a thought- that Deaf people are stupid and simple-minded. How far from the truth is that...hearies can truly be stupid. Not all of us are guilty of such stupidity.

"She is death" I had to remind them, I am deaf with an "F" not in th, but to correct them saying I am hard-of-hearing, not death.

I get that comment like the hearies don't understand the word "Deaf" and thought I meant to say that I am Death instead of Deaf. Gawd.

Do you understand me? (it like the hearies expect me to understand with my hearing aid whether lipreading or not) Grrrrrr!!!

"Is one of your son hearing, that could interpreter for you?"

"How much amount of hearing do you have if I use my voice?"

"How could u understand me, can you read lips or do I need to talk louder?"

"Wow I didn't know deaf people can speak?"

Are you deaf or what?
I've actually had that happen to me before.

I was working at a local video rental store years ago when this happened. I normally answer the phone when necessary. Most of the time, I understand the phone. In some cases, I will get a call that I can't understand... person talking too fast, unusual accent, other annoying background sounds, etc.

Anyways, this woman called and I answered the phone. She was talking really fast. I had a hard time understanding her. So, I politely asked her to repeat one more time slower. She immediately yelled, "WHAT ARE YOU... DEAF OR WHAT!?"

My reply? "Yes, ma'am... I am."

I could hear a huge *gulp* then a quiet "sorry"... and she hung up.

Me and my son in grocery store having a conversation in sign. Stranger walks up and asks:

"Oh, is he deaf?" (No lady, he's blind!)

Stupid is as stupid does.

It's all just that Deafies are clueless in regards to the Deaf world- the culture.

I once stated to a few of my relatives (aunts, uncles and such) about the Deaf folks angle. When I started to talk everyone, and I mean everyone (all hearies) stopped to listen closely to my words as if to gain an insight into the Deaf perspective.

Hearies are simply in the dark...their behavior is product of that ignorance so don't be too harsh. And I am not saying that because I myself am a hearie, I say that because it is just plain fair and the shameful truth. Education is the way to go. Remember that once, like the grand majority of hearing persons, I was lost too as to the Deaf before I started to learn about the culture on my own.

So many times it have happened to me at work since I work at a hotel. When I ask someone to slow down, I can't hear you, so they figured, oh I am deaf, they decided to speak loud. I said Hold it, lower your voice please, I am not deaf and I can still hear. They gets confusicated, hahaha.... I love that...

When a person is been scarastism, acting like I don't know anything...I always know by their tone, I used it as well and say I am not deaf and stupid, don't act like I am...and do not tell me what to do! You would have seen their face  and they say I don't mean...blah, blah, blah...
