Study links low intelligence with right-wing beliefs - The Globe and Mail

"Researchers have found a possible explanation for why certain people are prejudiced: they’re less intelligent.

Children with lower general intelligence are more likely to become prejudiced as adults, according to a Brock University study.

The study, published in the journal Psychological Science, examined data from two large-scale British studies, and found lower intelligence scores in childhood were predictors of greater racism in adulthood, which the researchers controversially explain is brought about by adopting right-wing ideologies.

A secondary analysis of data from a U.S. study also showed those with poor abstract-reasoning skills were more likely to have anti-homosexual prejudice, partially linked to authoritarian attitudes.

Lead researcher Gordon Hodson told LiveScience that the results of the study indicate a vicious cycle, in which people with low intelligence are drawn to socially conservative ideologies. In turn, those ideologies can contribute to prejudices.

“Socially conservative ideologies tend to offer structure and order,” he said, explaining why those with lower intelligence may gravitate toward the right. “Unfortunately, many of these features can contribute to prejudice.”

The researchers found that people with lower intelligence also tended to have less contact with other races and groups, which, Dr. Hodson said, supports previous research that determined interacting with other groups is mentally challenging and cognitively draining.

Dr. Hodson explained the findings do not mean all liberals are smart and all conservatives are stupid, LiveScience.com reports. “There are multiple examples of very bright conservatives and not-so-bright liberals, and many examples of very principled conservatives and very intolerant liberals,” he said.

Previous research has suggested that the brains of conservatives and liberals are wired differently."

I thought it was because they were more emotional, and leftists were more logical. My bad.

The OP has only one reason for posting this.......I mean, Hello, Transparency!

A much better title would be:

"Study links low intelligence with Hollywood actors."

Hodson's own prejudices and uncritical assumptions come through far more clearly than anything else he's said. this really is one of the funniest things I've read in ages. It might as well be headlined "Leftwinger proves to himself that his cherished prejudices are true."

There are a number of flaws in his underlying assumptions, and there's a huge leap from one conclusion to another with no underlying data supporting it and no effort to really apply a sound control group.

Not to mention the whole problem with the inconsistency in the left about whether or not IQ test scores are significant.

As we noted last month--and a tip of the hat to Heather Mac Donald for documenting the phenomenon--colleges and universities have developed sprawling bureaucracies to encourage "diversity," at the expense of traditional academics. Higher-ed institutions also pump out an enormous quantity of dubious scholarship that purportedly proves the ideological presupposition behind this business model--namely, that white racism is the proximate cause of all racial disparity. Here's a funny example, reported by LiveScience.com:
There's no gentle way to put it: People who give in to racism and prejudice may simply be dumb, according to a new study that is bound to stir public controversy.
The research finds that children with low intelligence are more likely to hold prejudiced attitudes as adults. These findings point to a vicious cycle [sic], according to lead researcher Gordon Hodson, a psychologist at Brock University in Ontario. Low-intelligence adults tend to gravitate toward socially conservative ideologies, the study found. Those ideologies, in turn, stress hierarchy and resistance to change, attitudes that can contribute to prejudice, Hodson wrote in an email to LiveScience.
So IQ tests are racist, except when they're used to "prove" that people with "socially conservative ideologies" are racist and intellectually inferior.
TheRoot.com has an article arguing that the Republican presidential candidates are racist. It's about as uninteresting an argument as you can find--but the headline is revealing: "Colorblind Racism: The New Norm." That Orwellian term, "colorblind racism," is the pithiest summation we've ever encountered of the absurdity of contemporary left-liberal racial dogma.

and there's this
:
Additionally, social and cognitive psychologist Brian Nosek of the University of Virginia politely, yet soundly cautions about lending credibility to Hodson‘s handiwork.
Doctor Nosek told Live Science “it is correlational. That means the researchers didn’t conclusively prove that the low intelligence caused the later prejudice. To do that, you’d have to somehow randomly assign otherwise identical people to be smart or dumb, liberal or conservative. Those sorts of studies obviously aren’t possible.”
Doctor Nosek also noted, “…a study of left-wing liberals with stereotypically naïve views like “every kid is a genius in his or her own way,” might find that people who hold these attitudes are also less bright. In other words, it might not be a particular ideology that is linked to stupidity, but extremist views in general.”
I submit that reasonable people of all sociopolitical persuasions understand that prejudice is typically a product of ignorance, which is not within the sole domain of any particular sociopolitical or other group, and even those who hold grand educational credentials can be ignorant.
Because reasonable people acknowledge these realities we rightly can and should automatically reject Hodson’s self-marginalizing handiwork for the unfortunately harmful, damaging, and unhelpful in the public interest and discourse product that it is.
bigotry, of course, is not the provenance of either left or right, and Hodson fails to offer anything but his own assumptions as proof that it is solely the provenance of the side he disdains.

According to the dictionary, a bigot is "a person who is intolerant of any ideas other than his or her own, especially on religion, politics, or race."

I think it's pretty obvious who is truly intolerant of ideas other than his or her own here.

It will better to say... "Study links low intelligence with anyone whoever believe about rolling7 saying."

Grayma -

I didn't quote from any leftwing websites. I merely quoted an article that was based on studies and findings from Psychology Today and LiveScience.

You quoted Colony Rabble from "Red County".

charlotte observer is saying leftwings attack anyone who is religious hence the reason they hate right wing republicans so much.

nice twist - religious right wing republicans are attempting to force the people to comply with their beliefs through politicial means which goes against the Consititution which calls for separation of Church and State.

"In contemporary culture, those who claim to tolerate everything are intolerant of ideas that come from perspectives other than their own, especially when those ideas are rooted in conservative politics or evangelical faith.
"

Well DUH. Evangelical conservative right wingers are the worst kind there is.

lol.

So do you mind me asking which is it, do you stand FOR the separation of government and church or don't? The reason I'm asking is because in another thread I got the idea that you don't.

I have read various articles covering this subject, and even posted about it, but for now I will refrain from making comments. :P

Too bad you are not American because you would make for a normal American politician.

Basically, the majority of evil, crazy, closed-minded and stupid right wingers. No wonder, people hate me. Ah, well.

There is good example about Maggie Gallagher and Brian Brown are completely ignorant people and very low intelligence, despite about having a college degree.

What a load of crap! I had neighbors that where very conservative and they where very intelligence! One neighbor was one of top engineer and worked for the government. Richard Nixon tried to get my neighbor to work for the White House defense department .My neighbor wife was a piano concert player and her father was one of Thomas Edison Pioneers. She had a photo of her dad with
Thomas Edison and some of his first light blubs . And she was one of most conservative woman I knew growing up and she was also one the most intelligence women I had ever meet! I could go with the intelligence conservative people I know. My neighbor was the most right wing person I knew and I respected him and loved him and his wife and he was a life long friend of my famliy. And their children are very intelligence too. This study is full of crap!
