Stressed out!!! >.<

Okay here's what happened today,

My mom seemed more calm and okay with what happened yesterday while we were at the wedding, My dad didn't know anything about it all day which is what my mom wanted. she wanted him to be happy and in a good mood.

Later today, my mom got me up around 11:30AM telling me that we need to tell my dad what happened. So I got extremely nervous about it. So I kind of panicked and both my mom and I went down to the family room and i told my dad i had bad news to tell him and my mom asked if i had the CI's on, i said no, told me to go get them on and i did, came back down and sat myself down. I started telling my dad in a fearful, trembling voice that I had to withdraw the class and my mom does better at explaining the story than I am when I become nervous like this. So my dad said he wasn't mad, he was disappointed, which I was surprised that he didn't have the green monster come out, but when he said he was disappointed, I felt disappointed in myself too. SO then my mom told my dad that I had a plan and how i went down to sinclair to talk to my disability counselor and register to retake the math class again, etc and my dad was suprised I did that because he said I was becoming an adult. But saying that on mondays, wednesdays and fridays I should take my homework and go down to sinclair and go to the tutoring services there so they can help me out and see what I'm doing right, and what i'm doing wrong so I can stay on the right track. Monday sinclair is closed tomorrow due to Columbus day.

My parents are still going to let me go see my boyfriend this month on the 26th because they know I really need it. And they don't want to get in the way of how much i really love my boyfriend and how we want to spend time together, and espcially since they paid for my plane ticket, they werent going to let that go to waste as well.

And then my parents and I were talking about getting me into an activity that doesn't have to be involved with grades, so that way I can meet people and gain new friends. I'm interested in doing that, but it'll be hard for me to pick an activity that I might like. Because I loved doing band and since I graduated high school, I can't do band anymore. Which is a bummer, beacuse my parents know that i'm used to being busy and if i'm not busy, then i'll go crazy.

Right now, i'm only afraid of taking the class again with the fear of failing that class AGAIN. And i hope to god I don't, i'm going to put in much more effort to pass that class. And my dad asked me if i was more motivated to do this again, and i replied yes. My dad said that I may be a pain in his butt, but he loves me. My parents said that this year is a test for me, If i cant succeed in sinclair, then I might have to go to trade school, which is NOT what I want to do. God help me. I have to prove to them that I can be college material. ugh. I'm going to need all the help I'm going to get at sinclair.

Ok, first, you need review the class syllabus frequently and do all assignments that your professor assigned you. Do you have notetaker? If yes so you need focus on importance of notetaker and make sure that ANYTHING that you can read and understand. There are some bad notetakers and if you can't read or understand, especially messy cursive sentences so inform to notetakers and they should make better, if not so inform to professor or disability office.

Are you allowed to use calculator in math class? If you have serious trouble with math course so you may need see someone who evaluate you for learning disability (LD) or other learning problems. If you can't understand about what analog clock tells or unable to do basic math like addition and subtraction so learning disability in math will likely to be confirmed.

How many credits that you have now? full time student? If you have 3-4 other classes so please on that, just try HARD to make A or B. You have same anxiety as I do with college and the college will never easier than high school. That's normal for many freshmen to fail the course so you are not exclusive person in freshmen classes.

You don't have go to trade school if you fail the college and you can try again to get a better result. Do you have VR? You can ask VR about tutoring service or you can try ask your school if they have, however in some community colleges, there are no tutoring service, especially in Alabama due to cut spending. You have option to use a federal loan if you disagree with your parent or ask them - none of their business, but you have to pay back after graduation. I had very bad argument with my parent in 2006 about college choice and future plan, even they were closer to kick me out, but resolved after had police visit because my father got me into fight and find way to force me to enroll the community college that I didn't like, so I refused to follow. My parent decided to leave me alone and I'm fully responsible to pay all classes, also VR supported me too.

I'm sorry about situation with your parent and that sounds not fun at all.

I don't know why it hasn't occurred to anyone that you be tested for learning disabilities. If your disability counselor so incompetent that she doesn't raise the obvious to your parents or are the counselor and your parents not communicating for some reason? My parents were always involved. This seems to be a vicious circle.

Laura

In Alabama, all disabled students, especially 11th, 12th and high school graduation required to have evaluation for LD, career interest, MBTI, cognitive thinking and other test measurement, before they can have VR support for college.

:wave:in relation to the math learning disability aspects of this thread - I have math LD or dyscalclulia and was tested through my university's Disabled Student Services office after continually failing remedial college math. I was put in that course due to pre-college placement scores on my ACT. The class was for credit but not part of the General Degree requirement for my university. I tried and tried but I didn't learn to tell time or make change til high school so this college remedial course was very hard for me. I always remember in any math class sitting there not understanding anything and feeling so lost and alone. I advise anyone who think they may have math LD to get tested, there are various ways to get it done for free or reduced, too.

coolgirl, my first year of college I really messed up, more than one class. I do think it's common - I know that doesn't make it any easier. I'm sorry about the situation with your parents. I know it can be very scary when parents are mad and hold grudges or fight.
I'm glad for your that your folks are still going to let you see your boyfriend!
I hope that things work out better for you....I'm wondering if there might be a support group for students who go through the Disabled Student Services and/or for d/Deaf students, where maybe you can get together with other students who can help each other out. When I was in college me and and another student with LD tried to start a support group for students with LD and we put together a little booklet for students with LD.

I have LD in reading and it was confirmed in 1994 and took evaluation again in this year so it is confirmed that I have LD in reading and my learning is more slower than normal hearing people. I spent a lot of time to write or type on everything, even AD too.

I do have a note taker in all of my classes. and my parents are in the process of getting me BVR and SSI. I'm a fulltime student and i'm probably taking 10-13 credit hours, at least that's what my mom is telling me. I have school only twice a week. But i go to school all day long. My first class is from 8-9:15 AM which is my reading class, then my math class is from 10-11:50AM , I have a 2 hour break which is being used to study and do homework. then at 2-4:40PM is my writing class. After that I don't get home due to traffic, and i won't be home until close to 5:30PM.

My parents aren't going to keep paying for the classes that I keep failing over and over again. Because they said they aren't going to keep financially supporting me. My parents does not want me to do a federal loan because they don't want me to be in debt. And my mom is worried about me because she's worried about my future since i had to withdrawal the class and retake it again this semester for the next "quarter".

All of my friends keep telling me that I should stand up to my parents about what I want for my future. But then I feel very afraid of doing that because they are the higher power. They want me to do what they want me to do for my future. they want me to get an associate's degree at sinclair. And my parents keep saying that sinclair is known for their reputation for cheapest tuition but does a really good job teaching their students and giving them the best education that they can. They are known for that nationally, So i'm told. But I'm glad they are known for that but I don't really want to go to sinclair.

My parents said that if i went to gallaudet, I would be in the same classes i'm taking now, except its more expensive, which I understand. and then I would miss some of the information there because my first language is in english, not ASL, and that their signing is at the speed of lighting. My deaf friends can sign pretty fast and I can understand them pretty well. I felt mad when they said that to me, but I didn't say anything. and that If i go there i would not like the dorms, and they think i would learn better in a hearing environment with an interpreter than a deaf school because of the way i've been mainstreamed. And another reason why they believe i want to go to gallaudet is because of my boyfriend, Yes that is part of the reason, but its mainly because I want the better opportunities that are being offered there, I want to learn more about my deaf culture, I want to pick up on my signing more and improve at it, and I want to have fun and be around people that are like me and not having to be judged on just because i'm deaf. But when I told my parents that, they think that is just a list of demands, not reasons. And I feel like since I wasn't proactive much in high school because I didn't have a lot of motivation in high school, they think i will do just the same in college, well, i'm going to prove them wrong. I have a lot of motivation to do well this year. And Its going to be hard, but I'm going to put in a lot of effort for the work. I admit, I'm going to need help, but, I'm going to stop being so stubborn about me being able to pull myself out of the hole when I know i can't and just go get help and not feel stupid or feel afraid to get help. I just wish my parents can see from my point of view. They said they can't afford to send me to gallaudet right now, which I understand, and they said they're TRYING to get me to gallaudet by getting me BVR and SSI to help me out and that they never said i couldn't go. And that I screwed myself up in high school and i put myself into sinclair because of what I did in high school. I wish they could just stop comparing me to my past and look into the future. I wish they could see from my point of view.

Oh I see, my classes are all weekday (Mon to Fri) because of four years university. The full time in college is 12 credits, but for graduate school - 9 credits.

BVR is VR? I'm surprised that you don't have VR before attend the college. It is strongly recommended you to meet with VR and they can discuss about future plans with you. VR supports you to get accommodations that you need.

I understand about Gallaudet University and if your ASL isn't expectational so you can take ASL 101 or 102 (likely 102 if you know about ASL basics). It is good idea to start community college before transfer to 4 years university.

I believe that you will be fine with college and just study hard, also make sure that you have correct materials that you need to study. If you don't understand so ask teacher after class or use email, so it should be very helpful. You are just like freshmen have a rough year for college.

I have an appointment with BVR on the 22nd at 9AM to discuss if I am elgible for it. I'm a little worried about it because I may be too "highly functional" to get BVR because I have CI's, i was able to play music in the band, and that I can support myself by taking care of myself. My boyfriend was applying for BVR one time, and he was being put on the waiting list for a year and a half because he was highly fuctional.

Oh really, I think that you will be fully eligible because you are profoundly deaf, that's one key that you will get support.

In here, you will be fully eligible for VR support but you will be in different counselor that woks with deaf/HoH people who use oral language.

That is true, but I don't have the deaf accent since my parents forced me to go to speech therapy for 18 years, and they got me CI's so i'm able to hear pretty well with them, but I do know sign. and my sign is SEE.. which i want to stops signing SEE and switch to ASL, which is what i'm training myself to do. Sometimes i want to be somebody that i want to be and not something my parents wants me to be. I feel like if I try to do something for me, my parents will look at me and say i have disappoint them.

Oh really, wow, yup, that's unfortunate about parent made choice for you, but at least, you should glad that you can make full communication with hearing people, but for me so I have to use paper to write or computer to type to communicate with hearing people.

I had speech therapy for 10 years - all failed and had CI - not work anymore.

I hope that you will be fine with VR appointment and I wish you doing well in college. :)

Thats good to hear how your parents react, and that is somewhat appropriate.

Tell you this, I took 5 algebra classes. The last one that I passed and finally figured out. Know what kind of math teacher for my last Algebra class? Answer is himself is DEAF, the last 4 were hearing and I don't understand nothing until Deaf with ASL, I got though. That was in NTID.

Yup, I prefer to have deaf teachers/professors.

The hearing teacher runs the special education made me so dumb.

:wave:Foxrac, I read that you reading learning disability; I've met many people with dyslexia. I know that it can take a long time to write or type things when you have LD. For me, having a learning disability led me to developing more patience and flexibility, I wonder if you can think of any ways that having LD helped you.

coolgirl, seems like you're doing the best you can and working hard:hug:

Good. Are you satisfied with that service?

Are you sure that's full-time? If you're taking three 3-credit hour classes, that's usually a total of nine hours, which isn't normally full time. Full-time is usually 12-18 hours. Sometimes fewer hours are accepted for full time during shorter sessions, such as summer or in-between semesters. I'm not trying to be mean but you really should know how many hours you are taking without asking your mom. Your online student account information, such as financial, semester schedule, course requirements list, etc., has all that information for you.

My parents aren't going to keep paying for the classes that I keep failing over and over again.
You haven't failed any courses over and over yet. Maybe you never will. Try to think more positive.

...My parents does not want me to do a federal loan because they don't want me to be in debt.
Good idea. School loan debt is a terrible burden.

And my mom is worried about me because she's worried about my future since i had to withdrawal the class and retake it again this semester for the next "quarter".
Good grief! Your entire future is not endangered just because you have to retake a math class! Too much drama in your family.

Oh, your college is on the quarter system, not a traditional Fall/Spring/Summer schedule? How is the academic year divided up?

We just call it VR here. Deaf clients have their own counselors who specialize in the needs of Deaf people. VR also provides financial aid for Deaf college students.

I received some accommodations for LD, specifically extended time for projects, assignments and exams, allow to postpone the test date if I'm not prepared and take test in room without any distraction.

The disability office at my university won't put tutoring service or personal feedback as accommodation, however Gallaudet University did that. After recent evaluation, they recommended me to receive a personal tutoring (one on one) and personal feedback to help with essays.

This year, ohio changed semesters. the quarters are usually about 16 weeks, and they thought it would be a lot easier if they shortened the quarters to 8 weeks so people would get their work done faster and get the hell out of there so they can start working on their major in the desired university that would be good for them. (excuse my language)

Here's a better explanation to it: Sinclair Community College: Semesters 2012

I don't have student loans, and my parents does not want to do government loans as well. They don't want to be in debt, and have be be in debt whenever I stop being under their insurance. My parents insurance said i can be under their insurance until i turn 26 years old.

My parents said i'm a full time student, they wanted me to have days where i can have more time to study and do well in school. And I'm trying to take advantage of that, But i know i need to put more effort into that. So i'll be going to the tutoring services that sinclair has to offer. Sinclair has FREE tutoring services as well. So we don't have to pay for that.

My parents actually applied to sinclair and made my schedule for me without letting me know. I was mad, because I wanted to do that but they kept saying that I was lazy and i was procrastinating about it.

They even applied to BVR and SSI for me... Like seriously?? i'm 19 years old, i'm going to be 20 next year, and I can't learn to be an adult if my parents keep doing everything for me. They keep feeling like if I try to do it, I might mess up and so they rather do it so I won't mess things up. UGH... Plus, they treat me like a 10 year old sometimes repeating things that I already know and they said they repeat things so it would be embbeded into my head so I wouldn't forget. Trust me, I won't forget it. But, Yeah my friends think i should stand up to myself against my parents and let me do what I want to do for my future. But I'm scared of doing that, because they're the higher power and I feel like if I try to stand up to them, I wouldn't have their support and I would feel like I'm being disowned in my family. I want to make them proud, not disappointed. But that is what it feels like all the time whenever i try to ask for their opinion on what I want to do in my life. Like maybe getting married to my boyfriend in 2 years and being engaged next year. My parents doesn't approve of me getting married while in school, because they think that I can't take care of myself. I'm perfectly capable of taking care of myself. And they can't see that. And they're worried about me being able to financially support myself as well, Yeah I suck at math but I'll figure out a way to financially support myself.

I love my parents, but, I wish they would let me do what I want to do for my life, even if it means going to gallaudet or getting married to my boyfriend while in school. My boyfriend and I discussed that we would balance things out by focusing on school first and getting things done for school, then focusing on us. We both agreed school is important, and that we want to get diplomas and have kids wayyy wayyy later. We already know that we want to get married because we knew each other for 12 years, and the both of us could see each other as a married couple. And so, My cousin just got married and she got married while in school. She graduated high school in 2009, and married to her husband on october 6th this year. Why can't I do the same thing?? I wish my parents would just let me do what I want to do with my life. I may be stubborn and that I don't understand. but, I just know i want to be with him.

Lot of oral deaf and hoh kids attends to gallaudet, most of them did not know ASL. They are required to come to gallaudet two weeks eariler before school started. I do not know what it is called now, but i forget the old name too. My hubby didt know much about ASL so he went there. It did help because he met other kids who are the same as him, on the speed of learning ASL. Most of them i know they did graduate from gallaudet and so was my hub. He did take a several honor classes.

Like your friends told you to stand up for your own. BUT when you feel ready you will know when to be ready. right now, i suggest you to focus on your current school and do your best to finish your classes for a year. So you will gain your knowledges of what you like to. one year to two years will make any difference in your life. my strong suggestion is to finish your courses for a year then you will know where you stand and get to know your parents better and show them you are capable of making decisions on your own.

The bottom line is to dont let things to scare you... Just face the reality and develop your own mind and learn from mistakes and will do better everyday. Be patient, live life and have faith.

Alternatively, you can look for scholarship instead of loans, but if you want to be fully independent from your parent so student loans, scholarship or VR that you can get to pay for your school. It is just options but you don't have to take.

Yup, you are lucky because we have federal law that expand the dependent age on health insurance until 26, but prior to that, you must be full time student and send an enrollment verification to insurance companies to keep you covered.

The problem with that is that my parents want me to go to sinclair for 2 years so tuition would be cheaper. They said they don't want to be paying for gallaudet's tutition that would be like a car payment. Which is why we're getting BVR and SSI to help maybe do that. But then another problem my dad said to me this week (which actually pissed me off) that I wouldn't be able to pick up any of the signings at Gallaudet, because they think i haven't gotten in touch with my signings for a few years, and that people at gallaudet will sign at the speed of lightening and i wouldn't understand them.. BULLCRAP! my boyfriend, and my deaf friends, sign pretty darn fast and I can understand them very well. And then my parents said that I would be better understanding things in a hearing enviroment with an interpreter so I can hear the teacher and understand what the teacher is saying by the interpreter AND getting more practice by learning more signs by the interpreter. I can't believe my parents think that Gallaudet may not be the right school for me. They think that I would not like Gallaudet because of me not liking St.Rita's school for the deaf... Gallaudet and St.Ritas is completely different. St.rita's has more strict rules, and you have to wear uniforms all the time and st.ritas is an elementary/middle school/high school private school for deaf and HOH kids. Gallaudet is a college, and what i heard is pretty laid back, very friendly, and has so many opportunities to offer for students who are going there. I feel like I would love it at Gallaudet than what I didn't like at St.ritas. I wish my parents would stop comparing me on how I wouldn't like Gallaudet because of St.Ritas. It's so annoying, and It just makes me mad.
