DENVER — The penalties for driving under the influence in Colorado gets a lot tougher beginning Wednesday as a new law could send drivers to prison if they care caught drunk behind the wheel.

For a long time, there have been complaints that Colorado was going too easy on drunk drivers, allowing people with multiple DUIs to remain on the road.

But lawmakers passed the tougher DUI bill in the spring so that changes starting Wednesday.

The aim is to get the habitual drunk driver off the road. Before Wednesday, many simply got a slap on the wrist and a misdemeanor charge with maybe one year in jail, then getting behind the wheel again.

But now the repeated drunk driver would face felony charges on a fourth DUI conviction. They could be sent to prison for up to six years and be hit with a $500,00 fine.

Some lawmakers said there are other ways to deal with drunk drivers and putting them in prison is too expensive. Colorado joins 45 other states in cracking down on drunk drivers with tougher DUI laws.

I'll be surprised if it does have a positive effect because it doesn't really focus on rehab but rather punishment. The penalty for murder is death and you would think people won't kill each other but it still happens.

IMO it would be more effective if they forced the drunks to undergo rehab or make them listen to victims of drunk drivers. They have to truly want to stop driving drunk in order to have a long-lasting effect.

Maryland has the toughest DUI laws in the nation. If drunk you'll be arrested put in jail and you'll serve some time in prison

Big, big fines in my State....would also like to see a Law passed for a 1st offense...big fine...and loss of license for a year. Nobody, and I mean, nobody...has the right to drive drunk....Call a cab or get a designated driver...And if someone is an alcoholic, then get a room near a Bar so they can walk back and forth...:giggle:...then again, the danger of public drunkness...getting thrown into Detox. And a Fine!....So better yet, do the drinking in your home.

There is restaurant near me that has rooms to rent for people who want an one nightstand , you get drunk and sleep it off too. A teenage girl was killed by a drunk driver in my city and her b/f was injury for life . :(

Robin serving time in prison is bigger then a damn fine. When a rich man drives drunk in your state big deal he pays the fine and gets back in his car drives off.

Prisons are for violent offenders...and they are overcrowded too. Makes no sense to incarnate someone for 1st offense of DUI...unless of course, it's manslaughter....Not everyone is "rich", and for those who are...a hefty fine and loss of their license for 1 year...besides, rich people usually hire drivers to get them around....throw in some Community Service too...such as cleaning toilets and scrubbing floors....:giggle:...don't think a "rich" person would want that.....

Rich people could afford to hire a lawyer to avoid the jail time.

Prison time for repeat DUI offenders seems overkill so they should lose the driver license permanently, combined with probation.

in NY - you drive drunk, they take your car.

Yeah, they impound it in Florida...and same for any drugs in your car...A friend was caught with a bag of weed and they impounded his car...and off to jail he went....and when he went to get his car out of impound, his stuff was stolen, tires/rims :giggle: were changed...he argued about it, but nothing much he could do about it....Feel those garages where cars are impounded are making a killing....

I have absolutely no problem with putting DUI offenders in jail if they're a danger to society.

in NY - the car cannot be returned back to owner until he gets acquitted. if found guilty, the car belongs to the state and it will be auctioned off.

If it is in your state - sure, it is your decision to put them in.

In here, no, we are broke, anyway.

Also, jail and prison are different. Jail is fine for DUI until they are settled down but prison is for convicted of felony crime - no way.

no it's not my decision. it's up to judge.

jail. prison. same sheet to me. bar's a bar. I'm not gonna sit around and wait for them to commit a felony and then put them behind the bars simply because of money. that's not how this country works.

then that guy in possession of canibis and he gets life and these people get slap on wrist it don't make sense

we had 2 young teenage sisters killed by DD he had licence suspended for a year that is all

This is precisely why law have to beef up the consequences

Oh please, they have done that for years, the truth is it won't help one if judge forced them undergoing these kind of treatment, its pretty much equivalent as mandatory 500 gallon of water tank to be brought to a horse, would a horse drink all of em? Probably not, maybe just 25 gallon... pointless of adding 475 gallon of water.

I am supporter of stricter DUI laws, Alcohol related accidents have been the highest of all other categories even Marijuana alone!

Here, too many drunks took too many wrong way drive on the highway causing several fatal accidents lately.
