who is the author pls ?

That author's Doug Bullard.

I think I may have met him a long time ago when I was still student @ TSD

However at Amazon.com one copy of "Islay" going for almost $100?! *THUD!*

First of all, lemme clear up some mistakes:
Martha's Vineyard is off the Cape Cod, and is part of the state of Massachusetts, not New Jersey. It was not a place where hearing people cast deafies away to breed amongst themselves, but an island where this family had genetic deafness and it passed on and on through the families marrying each other. There was like one deaf person for every 3 hearing person. Sign language was understood by both deaf and hearing people and everyone took part of the community.

In my work, my co-workers were talking about a city called Laurent, North Dakota, where they plan to set up an all deaf town, complete with school, offices, apartments etc for deafies. Supposed to be done by 2005, but I checked for that information online and couldn't find it. Oh well... Don't know if it is all "talk."

Kuifje -- thank u for the correction -- i was unsure which state it was LOL and yes the story abt Martha's Vineyard is correct abt it having at one time had a high concentration of deaf ppl living there on the island

It's not all talk, check HERE!

it says.. Welcome! The town of Laurent, South Dakota is a vision that has been in the making for many years. Our vision is for a place where our nation's signing community can gather together to live, work, play, and worship in comfort and beauty. Laurent, S.D. is not just for deaf or hard of hearing people — the town welcomes and embraces hearing people from all walks of life who want to be a part of the sign language community. Today, Laurent exists only as a dream in the minds of its founders, and now, it is up to us to actually build this town that is accessible, friendly, economically and politically viable. A place we can proudly call HOME.

ohh wow.. its cool.. lets move there.. lol hehe
