Actually, I am one of the interpreters for Shore Leave! There is an ASL workshop on Saturday morning every year. The woman who teaches it is the other interpreter. She is not a professional interpreter, she teaches deaf children. But that convention is how I have met several Star Trek actors and also actors from other sci-fi shows. You know that the Sci Fi convention in Baltimore (Shore Leave 29: A Fan-Run Science Fiction Convention) used to have interpreters who could sign for panels and discussions and things?
They would also have a work shop on ASL sometimes. I don't see it at their site this year. I'll have to check.
One of the Star Trek book authors is fluent in sign, you know.
Also, the guy who invented the Klingon language is as well.

If anybody from All-Deaf is going to be there, please come up to me and say hi! We usually only have 2-3 deaf people every year, I would love it if there were more! I am the younger terp that you will see on stage.
I am not sure which author you are referring to who is fluent in ASL...I know that Marc Okrand (creator of the Klingon language) is familiar with it, he and I used to be good friends many years ago. I think he may also have worked with CC in the past.
Well shoot, you should have said so in the first place! That's awesome. Yes, I was definitely at SL 25 and 26, I haven't missed one since 2002...so that's SL 24? Your name is familiar, so I'm sure we've met before. And yeah, Patti says every year that her sign skills are a bit rusty, so maybe she's not teaching deaf kids anymore? Her signing is a bit slow so that's probably why she's not a terp. Are you going to be there this year? The wink after saying the Trek author knows sign is...because it's me.
I'm Dave Galanter, one of the author guests. I didn't know Patti wasn't a terp--thought she was. Usually the website lists an ASL workshop and I don't see it there yet, so that's why I was concerned. I sent Patti an email after I posted to see if she was attenting.
So, likely you and I have met, and you met my brother the one year he came if you were at...I think it was Shore Leave 25 or 26. I forget now. Marc was there and he and I and my brother (and the guys who played Martok and Gowrahn (sp?)) talked a lot, because both Marc and I could interpret for Josh.
It was fun!
