Staff Tackles and Chokes Deaf Shopper suspected of Shoplifting

Deport him, then.

Like I said earlier, I know about him, he's nothing but a criminal. Serves him right but I do THINK that choking him is NOT the proper way. It's NEVER is because it invites abuse of power.

And another thing.. that deaf boy is illegal. He was not born here. He stole a lot, on a daily basis.. basically survive on stolen items.

How did you know if he is illegal immigrant?

If did so ICE would know and possibly to appear on report.

choke holds have actually been outlawed at a number of states and citiy police forces. the choke hold can either cut off the airway or stop blood flow to the head. matt hamill needs to do more choke holds !! he has not won with a submission yet.

Yes, definitely answers the questions. The guy is a scumbag, deaf or not. But, a chokehold is still excessive force. You, of course, don't think so, but a majority of this board and the population disagrees with you, and so do many police departments and state laws.

Anyway, I have very little sympathy for the two deaf guys at this point. If what you've posted (it still needs to be verified by independent investigation and eyewitnesses) is true, then these two guys brought the situation completely on themselves and were possibly even trying to use their deafness as a way to get out of the act. Thanks for setting deaf awareness two steps back, morons.

state law? where?

Jiro, there would be no point in doing a half-assed chokehold. It wouldn't really do much, but there are lots of different kinds of restraints you can use on someone.

I guess everybody in security/law enforcement field is not like Steven Seagal

not sure exactly where the choke hold is banned. it is also called a sleeper hold, cut off blood to head or air and they usually fall asleep. but they died too often so got banned. in philly penna it was a cop favorite until people started complaining. most police forces also have rules with handcuffing obsess suspects because they can die if they are handcuffed wrong. i have also done the citizen police academy where they discussed stuff like this. try it some time, you can teach your local police how to approach deaf people.

why? I don't feel sorry at all - not one tiny bit. Would you still feel sorry for him if he robbed your house?

I feel sorry for security guard because he got fired for doing his duty. Excessive force? Comical. Forever 21 management is a bunch of pansies and they're sending message to public - "c'mon! rob my store and we won't detain you! I'll fire whoever stopped you! Heck! I'll pay you million dollars lawsuit settlement if you got injured by security guard!"

What a bummer!....Since he's a repeat offender, he'll most likely get prison time.Guess he's got what some call "butter fingers"...has a habit of snitching things he wants, but can't afford to pay for....Lock him up!

Sticky fingers........Butter fingers means you drop stuff.

So it's more of department policy ban... not state law ban. I am aware of how dangerous it is and I understand but I am not aware of state law ban on it. perhaps you can show me the link?

try it some time,
I've done it during sparring and fighting. the last time I used it - he nearly blacked out and out of desperation, he popped my foot. it still clicks. I still use it and I will use it again if necessary.

I've already told my stories about cop incidents. it's at http://www.alldeaf.com/general-chat/72039-do-you-trust-cops-2.html#post1457271 and http://www.alldeaf.com/general-chat/78861-have-you-ever-been-pulled-over-cops.html

I've heard bunch of stories about deafies' experiences with cops. It is mostly unfortunate and traumatizing.

http://www.alldeaf.com/deaf-news/56174-communication-gap-frustrates-deaf-drivers-police.html

http://www.alldeaf.com/our-world-ou...justice-department-police-about-deaf-hoh.html
and dozens more....

I've not had any bad experiences with cops even though some of them were a power-tripping prick but more importantly - you (general ya'all) need to calm down and be cooperative. do not argue. do not lie. do not be rude just for 5 freakin' minute!!! If you still got arrested even though you are innocent, do not resist. do not fight. You will have your day at court and this officer will get a mark in his jacket. And at home - you should figure out how to make your 5 minutes with the cop as painless as possible. Make a deaf card. Know what to do. anything. I highly recommend this book - "Arrest-Proof Yourself". Extremely easy to read. Extremely informative. It's written by a criminal lawyer who was a former Miami cop and former FBI.

"Our internal investigation has shown conclusively that the security guard approached and identified himself to the suspect after the light and sound anti-theft alarms were triggered. The suspect visually acknowledged the guard and then turned and fled the scene. According to media reports, the suspect was arrested and charged with robbery and shoplifting by the LAPD. We recognize that the security guard used excessive force, which is against our store policy and have suspended him indefinitely," wrote Kristen Strickler, Forever 21 Marketing Dept.

in other word..... fired perhaps? Even if the security guard was in clear - I doubt he will be working there again.

law 101 - keep your mouth shut. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law.

I was referring to Pablo's interview. Alejandro was the one who was arrested. I am questioning a journalist's job. If he asks Pablo a question regarding Alejandro's history, then why didn't he show it on the news?

He didn't fight back. why? because the security guard wasn't really choking him. He was "locking" him in place until the police arrives. See how the suspect was all calm (not gasping for breath) when he was handcuffed by cop? That means he wasn't really choked to death nor was in a great fear of his life.

Choke hold is not a popular topic in Southern CA. LAPD and SDPD have long history of choke hold from 80s to present. It is extremely well known LAPD has a choke hold ban policy except in life threatening situations for years. That's why many stores in CA have a policy against it due to many reasons, including lawsuits. Security guards should be aware.

Alejandro's face turned purple due to lack of oxygen. He kept patting on a security guard.

Netrox,

Do you have a source that Alejandro is illegal?

same as above. it can and will be used against Alejandro.

Alejandro and any other people (hearie and deafie) should be aware that the arrest would be painless and quick if they do not resist

He looks fine to me (and little bit out of air). From what I see - he was trying to get his attention. to communicate with him. Beside..... at the very beginning of the clip.. just several seconds later, the chokehold was released and the security guard pinned his left arm back. Why did Alejandro continue to resist?

Skip ahead to 1:44 where the guard was on top of him and Alejandro was telling the guard that he's deaf. I can see that the guard acknowledged him at 2:05 and the guard was gesturing - turn around or something.

I guess it's a typical PR move. If you fired him - that would mean he did something wrong.

I guess they'll fire him after he's cleared of wrongdoing.

oh wow!!

security guards have no respect for deaf people!! That so stupid!

whynot security must fired for what did to deaf guys and choke him that wrong!! But that not right!!

mostly store have serious strict policy no stealing from store if got alarm they can arrest or suspended from store for one years or banned!! You saw on tv TLC Mall cops

We are talking about the security guard
