I think I hate Spokeo.com more than I hate the AG Bell Association.
Most likely, the government is the only entity that can stop this kind of intrusion by making it illegal for third party sources to make private citizens' information visible to casual Internet surfers without the citizen's explicit permission. I don't think the government can stop these aggregators from selling the information. The junk mail industry has thrived on these kinds of sales for years. But some kind of legislation should be able to stop aggregators from exposing the phone numbers, home addresses, and personal income of people with whom these sites have no direct relationship. Or at least perhaps some kind of privacy legislation can force these sites to reveal the original sources so citizens can have their information hidden at those websites or databases.
I checked out quite a few names from family and old friends. Not much was accurate. For me, it lists my hubby and MIL as being my parents and says that I own the house when MIL does. For my oldest brother, it says I am his child. For an old boyfriend, it shows him alive and well here in town. He died 10 years ago to suicide and was not here at the time.
I was surfing and I found Spokeo site, which I never heard of. So, I decided to check this site. Oh, OMG.. This site is scary and tooo much information.. That's why I wanted to share it with you all, guys. I am glad some of you did remove yourself. Any of you don't know how to remove. So, here are steps to remove yourself from Spokeo.com:
1. Go to People Search | White Pages | Find People | FREE!
2. Search for yourself, using name, town and state
3. Look at the list of names found (on the left) and click on the one that is yours
4. Go to the top of the page and copy the URL in the browser bar
5. Go to the bottom of the spokeo.com page and look for the word privacy and click on it
6. Paste or type the URL into the box
7. CLick "Remove" and you are done
I hope it helps.
The second link you posted contains your name. Everyone needs to use their own name to remove themselves. I removed your link from this post. You might wish to remove it also, since it contains your name.
