There is a site called Spokeo.com that's a new online USA phone book with personal information; everything from pics you have posted on FB or web, your approx credit score, pics of where you live, income, age. Remove yourself by searching your name, find the page of yourself, copy the URL and then go to the bottom of the page and check on the Privacy link to remove yourself. Copy and re-post, so your FB friends are aware!

This site is really scary... too much information...

Very helpful at times when I was moderating website.

Okay, had to remove my information again.

But this time my information was pretty impressive I almost left it up. ;)

why do you wanna know where they live?

I used to be staff / moderator on TagDeaf. I used Spokeo site to look up new TagDeaf member if their IP address is hard to tell. so I used Spokeo to find their location.. If spokeo said they are from Nigeria / Africa (or other foreign IP address) while their TD profile stated USA, they get banned. I used it for TagDeaf IP address only. Not for enjoy myself like look up my friend email address to see their background or what other sites they joined, Etc. I probably will cancel my subscription when it is expiring in a few months since TagDeaf is already shut down recently.

Spokeo only show name of town and country, and other sites they joined and sometimes blogs and pictures from other sites from their email address. Street address or telephone number are not shown unless you want to upgrade to gold or silver account (or something like that). Mine is just basic.

No, Spokeo DOES show the address.....

I haven't seen one. Mine is basic account so I assiumed you have higher account like Gold / Silver / Preimum account (or something like that?) than me?

A lot of information, I'll say. They don't seem to have one for the Canucks though. :hmm:

Nope, never heard of Spokeo until about an hour ago when I entered the site for the first time and I saw that addresses were/are shown.....like Jiro said: for free before joining.

I find Spokeo idea very distasteful. It's ironic. The government are cracking down on torrent sites for simply displaying results which hosts NO illegal software/movie/music in its server but they claim it facilitates piracy... so why not Spokeo? It facilitates stalking, harassment, etc.

Just because our information is "out there" in public registry doesn't mean any site has rights to make it much easier for one to look up on people. I don't see any useful purpose for this site. How is it beneficial for public???

I forgot to discuss about this with my law friend. I'd like to see a class action lawsuit on sites like Spokeo and I hope that our privacy law is as stringent as Europe.

OUR HISTORY
The concept of Spokeo started in 2005, when Harrison was a student at Stanford and liked to bounce back and forth amongst various social networks. At the time, most of his friends had profiles on MySpace, some blogged on Xanga, and his dorm mates were constantly sharing YouTube videos. Harrison was having trouble keeping up with his friends’ activities across multiple forums, so he rounded up his college buddies to help build a so-called social-network aggregator to collect the information for him. Working out of his parents’ basement, Harrison and his friends publicly launched this pioneering concept on Techcrunch in late 2006.

While the social network aggregation concept was indeed novel, the creators soon realized that some users were still having difficulties distinguishing among their friends accounts. With this insight, Spokeo set out to build a new search technology designed to automatically detect and distinguish online identities associated with particular emails and URLs. In late 2007 Spokeo refocused on automated people search, and launched its new concept on TechCrunch for a second time.

Millions of people use Spokeo regularly to connect with family members, old friends, business contacts and others. Spokeo’s long-term aspiration is to organize people-related data across the globe, and integrate additional types of data to better connect people worldwide.

so I get it that Spokeo was designed to let people find their "long-lost" friends/association/etc but is there a reason for Spokeo to offer additional information like a person's income? relationship status? "and more" for a mere $2.95 a month?

You want to find long-lost friend or love? get a facebook. FB does a better job at this and it's not that intrusive at all because it's 100% voluntary.
