I just found out from my son told me. He was not allowed to be on spelling bee contest because he knows how to fingerspelling.I taught his class some sign language for one year and none of them were allowed to be part of it.

Any of you deaf parents of hearing children, do they get a chance to particaple in spelling bee contest?

I won 2 times for the best spelling in the class when i was in elementary. I never went to spelling bee before, though.

Wow, I think it is not fair, because some deaf people got lack of reading the fingerspelling, same with hearing people (lack of listening by each words) I do not see any difference.

Spelling bee is all based on memory.

That is bizarre and totally unjustified?

Who made up that stupid rule?

eek... I had been in spelling bee at public school when I was in 1st-3rd grade and allowed deaf people to answer with fingerspelling.

Wow, he should be involved no matter what he did learn or something...

I never involve any spelling bee competition...

I have no idea who made this stupid rule but his teacher told him, he can't be part of contest bec he know how to fingerspelling. Now I wonder about rest of other schools, do they allow kids who know how to fingerspelling to be part of spelling bee contests? .

I wish he was part of it, he was very good at it. He scored high on national test on spelling. Too bad he was not allowed bec he knew sign language.

Cool, I wish we had spelling bee for deaf kids in my time. Wonder if deaf schools do have them?

I agree it is not fair. My son never got a chance to experience this and it may help him somehow and prove himself he can do it. I wish he told me about it when he was kid then I would have fight for it.

No its not fair that they won't let him because of that & I can understand why. But there is judges, teachers & everything there for people to watch & see if hes cheating like that or not. So they should just allow him in it regardless & if hes caught finger spelling (which I'm sure he wouldn't) then get disqulified just like anyone else would if caught cheating..So no thats not fair at all..Sorry to hear about that:(

I think that may be illeagle to do that, you might want to make some phone calls about that , saying your son can't be in a spelling bee just because he useis sign is like saying your deaf so you can't do that. what state do you live in? this hass to be against the ADA.

HUH? That's UNFAIR!!! You happen to have child that know ASL and raised with deaf parent. UGH! FIGHT BACK, girlie!

I wanted my kid to be part of it too! And part of learning, enjoy, self esteem etc. I was on Goerprahy (shyt forgot how to spell that!) bee and it was so much fun! But I didn't make it to the final!

I'm with Reba, Who said that those who knows finger-spelling aren't allowed to participle?
