Twas the night before Christmas when all though the South,
The Rebels invited the Yanks into their house.
The muskets were stacked by the chimney with care, in hopes that General Lee would eventually be there.
The troops were all nestled, snug in their beds. with visions of big cannons that danced through their heads.
My wife in her hoop skirt and I in my cap,
Had just settled in for an uneasy nap.
When way out yonder, I heard such a noise,
I thought it was the fight , of a few of our boys.
Away to my post, I flew like a flash,
I opened my bag and smoked all my stash.
By the rockets red glare on the new fallen snow,
It gave light to the woods, to the yankees below.
Then I blinked my eyes on what should appear,
General Lee and Jackson were standing right here.
They sprang to their horse and gave a mighty command.
For some strange reason, and I didn't know why, Rebs and Yanks began to all cry. It was Christmas eve and I didn't hear the order, but the generals shouted "Give all troops a very warm quarter."
Now, the generals rode off with out starting a fight,
They said "Merry Christmas to all,
and to all a good night."
