Hello!! My name is Amanda (or Mandi for short) and I'm 28 years old. I'm a hearing, ASL and interpreting student. I will be graduating with my AA in Deaf studies next semester and talking the EIPA test to start working as an interpreter for school age kids. My goal is to become a teacher for the Deaf. Is there any deaf people in Reno? I think no because they were too busy playing casino.

Haha, there are Deaf in Reno but the community is REALLY small...maybe they did get lost inside the casinos! I grew up in SoCal and there were about 3,000 Deaf in my city. When I moved to Reno I was shocked to see that there were not many Deaf people or events for Deaf here. :(

lol! well, I have a deaf friend who lives there but haven't contact him since about 7 or 8 years agol when I met him at my college at NTID/RIT.

Yeah. I go to Lake Tahoe almost every weekends during winter times, sometimes I visit Reno, wow it's basically "dead" town. Everyone go there for cheap hotels ($25/night) and casinos. It is true that not many deaf people live in Reno, it's a small city with bad economic background. I'm curious...what makes you move to Reno from SoCal?

I LOVE Tahoe!! I don't get to go as often as you, but usually about one time a month in the summer. I don't like the snow and am TERRIBLE at snowboarding, so I like Tahoe more in the spring and summer. And Reno isn't all that bad, lol. I like it more than I expected, but I was very disappointed that the Deaf community is so small. I moved here about 6 years ago with my hubby. His son lives in Reno with his mom and we lived in SoCal, so we decided to move here to be closer to them.

What part of Tahoe do you usually visit? The lake is huge, there are so many different towns to visit and see

If you have a community college nearby you should look for ASL classes, that's how I started learning! I took ASL 1 when I was 17 and just fell in love with the language, culture, and people. If you're not able to take a class, maybe look online at websites like lifeprint.com that have beginner lessons? The language is so different than English, it has it's own rules and grammar, I can't imagine trying to learn without the help of a teacher.

I hope you're able to learn ASL and meet some Deaf friends, it's really an amazing language :)

Hi Mandi!

I am just starting to research how to become an ASL interpreter and would love some guidance/advice! It has been a dream of mine for years, but was never offered at my high school or college. I am now 24 realizing this is the path for me. I am planning on taking classes this fall at Gallaudet University!

Im Deaf and live in Reno (Sparks) The only place in the casinos that I get lost are at the Buffets. Pawsome that you are here. We need more Interpreters in this area.

Its actually a pretty happening town. The Tesla gigafactory is expected to bring 6000 direct and 20000 indirect jobs to the area. It has potential to be the next silicon valley. CA is driving companies out of the state because its too espensive to do business there. Reno is only a few hrs from the bay area and silicon valley. we have no state income tax, great climate. Property values are going up like crazy. I'm trying to buy a home right now. there is no supply, 500 sales a month but only 300-400 new listings each month... oh and we are the closest big city to Burning Man...

But we don't want too many Californians moving here and trying to make it into another Nanny State.
