Sony Playstation 3 advice

Hi fellows! To get this out of the way, I know and understand absolutely nothing about computer and video games. And I'm hearing. That said, I need all the advice and information I can get on the latest hype video game console, Sony Playstation 3. This evening after practice, I plan to purchase a Sony 60GB PlayStation 3. A classmate of mine is a senior employee of the computer and video game store and he is willing to bend the policies for few of us which reassures us having not to stand and wait in line for the merchandise.

It is for my Deaf friend, Chris, who gave up his social time and swapped the schedule to spend his time teaching me ASL and Deaf culture when I had cancelled the ASL tutor for cheerleading activities. I felt terrible about it when I cancelled the ASL tutor but I had no choice. I want to accommodate him with a gift for the social time he relinquished for me. He had chitchatted quite a little about the Sony Playstation 3 which led me to this idea what to get for him. He also brought up that he couldn't afford it and cannot be bothered to stand and wait in line.

There is a technical information I've inquired about. Given the fact that Chris is Deaf, does Sony Playstation 3 comes with a Closed Caption component for the video games? I could ask him myself but I want to surprise him with the gift I plan to acquire. A senior employee I recounted above is hearing and had no idea what I was referring to. If it doesn't come with a Closed Caption component, I wouldn't purchase it for Chris. And moreover, is or will be there a external/internal hardware to implement the Closed Caption for Sony Playstation 3 if it doesn't? I had browsed the thread but it was for older generation consoles.

Needless to say, I have to purchase one or two video games that he'd enjoyed playing on the Sony Playstation 3. What games I should get for him? Obviously; I couldn't ask him, else he'd descry my surprise gift. His interests lie in movie genres are war and action. I hope it's helpful enough for you fellows to suggest what games for me to purchase. Can computer games be played on Sony Playstation 3?


Coincidentally, no thank to Sony Playstation 3 hype, I was abetted by my Sociology professor to commit an essay on pop culture: computer and video games to broaden my sociological materials. Feh.
 
From just looking at your avatar, I know exactly what is going down here.

Chris is teaching you ASL with hopes of going on a date with you. A friendly night out together will mean more to him than giving him a PS3 as a gift.

But, if you insist, I can teach you the alphabets in exchange for a Playstation 3. Yeah, terribly unfair for me but oh well, anything for a PS3.

First of all, do you realize that a base model Playstation 3 will cost you half a grand? The top tier model Playstation 3 will cost you an extra hundred dollars.

Then the games themselves are 60 a pop. And the component cables are mainly for video output and only subtitles (DVD's and such) can go through it. The television's closed captioning software does all the dirty work with most input (cable, antenna, VCR's, etc.) but has a slight time delay when the broadcast/input is fed live.

So, are you ready to pony up around 720 dollars plus tax in exchange for sign language?

I'm sorry but I have to push all my chips in on this and call you out.

All in. Is this a joke? If not, Chris is gonna be the happiest dude for the next few days. Good luck!
 
All consoles are capable of displaying captions. It depends on each individual game as to whether there are subtitles/captions. So you'd want to find out whether whatever game you're buying has them.

Good luck finding a PS3 at the moment, though, unless you want to pay $3000 on eBay.
 
Hi fellows, again. Given the limited time frame...I received an email which was enclosed with a tip that there are a few active Deaf Playstation fans, I've decided quickly make a thread at the Sony Playstation forum. Several fellows responded swiftly and I took steps per their recommendation regarding the games and the Closed Caption component. I relied on their advices, I purchased two games --- Call of Duty 3 and Resistance Fall of Man. The line is unbelievably long for a mere Sony Playstation 3 console and games. I could grasp the concept of standing and waiting in line for a concert or new movies but consoles and games? That's something new to me and there is a positive side about being a foreigner in America, there are many new experiences and things to learn, to assimilate and to adapt.

The total cost for the console and two games: essentially $780 USD. Considering the college textbook fees, I shouldn't be complaining. But of course, the facial expression and bodily response I received from Chris was worth every penny.

Hi Fragmenter! True but actually I'm chasing after Chris, not the other way around. Moreover, I had been crossing my fingers to have him as my ASL tutor and surprisingly, I got what I wished for. He is the one who was blind or oblivious to my hints. Until last weekend at my house for the post-Homecoming game party and NFL game: New Orleans v. Pittsburgh, he finally apperceived of my hints I physically gave him.

You may be right about "going on a date with him" would mean more to him but I don't want him to take it the wrong way. That said, I'd rather have him to understand the message that I'm interested in him as an individual, not using him nor his ASL skills to teach me ASL and all that. Although, I had asked (and would pay) him to teach me ASL to get him interested in me which was a bad move. I have to keep the blurred lines separate and willing to take it to some extent. Thus the reason I bought the PS3 for his patience and his headstrong with my frenetic schedule [21 units, cheerleading and other activities].
 
PS3s are all sold out so you would have to wait awhile 'til all the stores and customers calm down from the PS3 hype and all so, the PS3 is obvioulsy the most expensive console out there in the market this generation of videogaming history so of course, it would still be a great gift for your friend since your friend likes war and action flicks, then Resistance Fall of Man, the number one anticapted game for the PS3 would be a pretty good choice. besides you dont need some kind of closed captioned compentent or something...it's the games. Some games do show subtitles while some dont so it depends. But in this generation today most games appear to show subtitles so thats a good thing to get a wider audience including deaf gamers to join in the fun.

good luck but no need to rush anyway since the PS3 stocks would be quite a while to get back to normal lol.

He relinquished his social time and had taught me ASL and Deaf culture for many hours and weeks and I just felt that it's the best reasonable thing to do. FCC doesnt really do any work the the games...usually only the developers who makes the game can add in subtitles like Capcom (Dead Rising), Konami (Metal Gear Solid 4) and even Nintendo's own games are subtitled as well. So it's the developes that makes the subtitles, not the FCC or anyone else.

Yikes! That's unfair to Deaf people. But I want to construe my old comment. There aren't FCC-like regulatory government to enforce the rules upon the developers to bind --- I don't know the right technical word for it --- the captions to the games to make them accessible for Deaf people who has similar interests as you gamers do in games?
 
Well yeah it would be alot easier for most of us lol but then again, I dunno. There should also be some FCC stuff when it comes to movies in theatres and I would definetly love to watch movies with capitons on the screen but due to the cost of capitoning, they do it the much cheaper way which is rear view captioning and I honestly HATE it lol it looks so cheap and pathetic lol so I dont go to movie theatres that often thou I wait for movies to arrive on DVD instead.

Yep, being a deaf person can suck in alot of ways but then again, the government do suck even more lol.

Ha ha. That one I amiably concur.

Not to be too socialist, I'd think there is a profitable benefit in FCC-like regulatory government for video games. Given the accessiblity, Deaf people easily could become promising consumers and customers. Profits prevail minor subsistence fees.
 
It's up to you for get PS3 but all are sold out right now.
 
Hi Pacman, I already acquired it for Chris. He's holed up in his dormitory room playing the games on PS3 at this minute. Although, I had played with him a little by pestering him via paging him repeatedly while he was playing the games. Recently, he turned it off. =(

Closed captioning isn't exactly something you would expect from games. Either the games are subtitled or not. There's no closed captioning. Closed captioning is for videos such as VHS or DVD and that would be done through a television or a captioning decoder.
 
Ruliya, if you want Chris' attention... you lost it by giving him the PS3 :) He's not gonna come out of his bedroom for a week.
