Just bought a new Sony HDTV and am juggling between two CC: analog and digital.

The digital captions are terrible. The analogs are far better and smoother to read, instead of jumping up on the screen.

Downside to that is the analog CC has mediocre picture quality. HD is far better, but crappy captions.

Any suggestions as to how to set up the TV to get the best of both worlds? Ideally, I'd like to watch programs in HD with the older CC mode.

That same way. My HDTV is Polaroid 19" has sometimes bad captioning
on digital, but analog captioning are great as regular TV CC.

it is not only your Television. Do you know why..... Hearing people prefer focus on perfection Video and Sound and the (CC) is the last priority for them to fix. That's why I do not appreciate it. For now, give time to get it right and close enough to be perfection.

How I do know this. I have been talked to many friends who know a lot of CC issue.

you said "The digital captions are terrible." Which you use OTA or CableTV Set-Box/DVR?

I need to learn about the easiest way to make CC work with HDTV. My in-laws have HDTV and the captioning doesn't work right. When I watch TV with them, we have special headphones for me that play really loud in my ears so I can understand what's going on! But then I don't get to have conversation with my family. Soon we are going to buy an HDTV for our house too, and I want to get one with good CC. What's the best one to get? We don't have a brand or model in mind, just tell me what is the best one and we can get that! I gotta have my CC. :D

Bottom of line. Remember, this machine is man made and not always prefect and as I say, caption is less important to them so it will take a while to get right. I know, if the caption have problem that's mean you have to talk with FCC and make report the problem then they take care it. We are play gamble on pick right TV doing good job on (CC) and another device. That's suck. I dislike it. Now I am lucky found new 2008 Sony 40" TV and the (CC) doing good job so far also I love those custom (CC) and gave me more freedom of choice.

mojovase, you did not question me

Sony's Digital CC is not terrible, why? Sony's both Analog and Digital CC are nice! if you use OTA, Sony's Digital CC will very nice, smooth, etc.. if you use Set-Box or DVR, Sony's Digital CC cannot, only Set-Box or DVR are bulti-in Digital CC, But Set-Box or DVR are weak! not smooth 3 line,

you need test OTA Antenne, you will be suprise Sony't Digital CC is nice! than set-box or DVR, I will wait on 2009 that no longer VCR, JVC, Sony, Sunsang will make new DVR with bulti-in Digital CC, they will super nice than Set-box or DVR Band (motorlina, rent box, etc..)

We have Sony 32" LCD for over a year. No problem with CC and digital CC by over the air (Antenna). One thing, we have nothing do with weak signal.

We have Verizon FIOS and HDTV Box with DVR. Very lousy CC. Do not blame Sony. Just blame Motorola HDTV Box and Verizon FIOS. Same as Comcast has Motorola HDTV Box.

the captioning on most (standard) channels appears and disappears after about half a second (too fast to even read).

I had that problem with Motorola set-top box from Comcast with Comcast HD, but then I sent the cable box back and downgraded to Basic, since I can't afford HD programming anymore.

Anyway, in my Mitsubishi WD-Y577 57" DLP HDTV, I am able to configure Digital Closed Caption. What I do is activate menu, scroll down to captions, press the right arrow key twice, press down, and there I can configure Font, Font Size, Font Color, Font Opacity, Background Color, and Background Opacity.

Note by default: Digital Closed Captions displays depending on programming and what shows you're watching. For example, in Show A, they may choose Font 1 with black text on yellow translucent background. Show B will have Font 2 with white text on blue background that flashes, and so forth.

For my choice of settings, I chose Font 4 (Arial variable-sized font), large size, yellow, Opaque text, translucent black background.

CC via Directv HD receiver is great, I can customize the font, size, color, etc.

Yes, I agree. One month ago, I played with DirecTV HD box. It is look great CC. You can choice any color, font, size, etc.
I have no idea how is good CC on Smallville from DirecTV HD.

Motorola HD Box (with DVR or without DVR) from Comast and FIOS are sucker. No way to change color, font, etc. I did set up color and larger size. Still nothing change size of font and color text.

All HDTV (Sony, Panasonic, Sharp, JVC, Toshiba, etc) have nothing wrong with CC. Let blame Comcast, Warner, FIOS or other cable co to make lousy Digital CC from Motorola HD box.
Yesterday, we bought HDTV for my son. Now, we have 4th HDTV (3 HDTV at home and 1 for my son's apt at college).

Some HD channels aren't captioned, you need see "CC" on guide if captioned or not.

Time Warner don't use Motorola HD receiver, they use Scientific Atlanta HD receiver.

I wish Comcast had Scientific Atlanta cable box rather than Motorola.

Motorola's HD DVR cable box heats up really high and freezes a lot, causing me to wait for guide data to come on like about every 5 to 10 minutes. Irritating.

Don't worry, I will quit motolia DVR until Sony, JVC, samsung will new techology with mutli cablecard or OTA for DVR because Feb 17, 2009 will no longer analog but they need OTA or Cable/Card to DVR because VCR is no longer, people will be upset without VCR on Feb 17, 2009, I hope Sony, JVC, Samsung, make it soon

Set-box or dvr is lousy but Sony, JVC, Sunsamg, etc.. they have Ready CableCard slot to HDTV, will very nice CC Digital

Our 5 years old HDTV has built in cable card and ASTM. Yes, Cablecard give us better CC and choice color, font, size, etc..

That's sad news all new HDTV does not have cable card slot.
Go ahead you go to Electronic store like Best Buy, Circuit City, Sears, etc. You can't find any HDTV with Cable Card Slot.

My Mitsubishi HDTV doesn't have one (WD-Y577 57" DLP HDTV).

don't worry, maybe DVR will come soon becuase VCR is no longer on Feb 17, 2009, people will need scdedule or leave, use VCR, Sony, JVC, Samsung will techology DVR for OTA or CableCard on DVR

VCR is no longer? What do you mean? The DTV transition is on 2/17/09 but it has nothing to do with VCRs.

CableCard on DVR

Tive HD box need 1 or 2 cablecard(s). We tried it before. It is nice caption.

My son listen voice and read caption. He said that some missing caption. He would say about 5 percent missing. We noticed most lost caption on Smallville. I returned TIVO HD for refund.

Smallville + Tivo HD lost +50 percent Caption
Smallville + Motorola HD box (with or without DVR) at HD is poor quality caption (fad text)
Smallville + Motorola HD box at standard: can't read in half second (too fast)
Smallville + Motorola's Standard TV Box is great caption but no widescreen
Smallville + Antenna (over the air): great CC but weak signal.
