Sometimes...

How can you pretend to know sign when you don't?

Short of actually knowing sign language, it's just moving the hands around in a nonsensical way. Do you see how insulting that is to someone who is actually deaf?

You weren't actually there. I was making the correct signs, because I do actually look up the signs. I know more than the avg person who doesn't study, I just thought getting on here would actually help more with speed.

Give me an example.

People can understand gestures - ansd there are a small percentage of Signs which are descriptive/gesture based ... However the majority of signs are not (for hearing) intuative signs.
People (strangers) often fake that they understand what you think you are signing (however being that you're "teaching yourself" who even knows if your forming the signs correctly or not). Basically they smile, nod etc so they can get rid of you sooner.

Also people who are actually hoh/Deaf make sure that we are understod (pen paper etc) we sont stand there signing (without speaking) to hearing people ignorant of ASL ... It's pointless and actually encourages disrespect - ie it doesn't create a situation where both side are able to acutally communicate.

You should make some youtube videos of you signing - that way we could offer suggestions

That is a fantastic suggestion!

How do you get to define how someone practices? I sign the songs I listen to, I sign the conversations I'm apart of... practicing in front of the mirror is not the only way... and I don't go up to random strangers.

I really don't understand how it's different from using any other language. My Japanese teacher (as enthusiastic as she was) told me to start speaking to people in Japanese that way they ask and wonder about it in order to keep the language from being discontinued at our school... and I'm not even a native speaker... how is that different?

So you did take Japanese in college with your Japanese teacher. It is not the same thing like we do differently than the Japanese teacher teach. So you mean no ASL class in your college. But still there should be ASL class in community college or some place where you can learn to sign proper way. Only place I could think of is the Kentucky School for the Deaf if it is not close. They will give you information and where to find (maybe) a free ASL class. :dunno:

LoveBlue:
SEE is signed too (bunch of extra 'stuff' added, like adding "ing","ed", "est" etc to signs to make them "english") - ick.

SEE would be just as (of not more) visually incomprehensible to a hearing person (who doesn't sign)

Thanks for the info.

I had a Asian woman sign to me in a way I could understand that she was looking for the women's room. I'm sure the sign she used is not a part of ASL or her countries sign language.

And didn't you say you were learning SEE, not ASL? If you're using SEE (which I've never seen), that may be why the people seem to know what you're "saying".

I was using the sign and sentence structure from Lifeprint. Which someone recommended for me on here. Before that, yeah I was using SEE, but even then I was looking up the signs on website recommend to me.

I probably would do that but I think it would lead to further discrimination... unless you guys are actually willing to teach me and not bash me...

When I picked up ASL from life print I never used the 'ing' 'ed' and all of that because if you can communicate the idea without it then why use it. I found it confusing to add it.

Then you weren't using SEE, because there is no SEE dictionary available online. Bott's statement about you using PSE seems to be spot on.

Isn't it important to you that what you are doing is actually correct (and if not, that someone will correct you)?

If you're not taking classes at least we could get an idea of your skill level and make suggestions.

There's no point in learning a language wrong.

You should probably just stop now.

Right, there's not ASL classes offered at my college, which is dumb because I know they probably have the money to do so. There are some colleges a little ways from me that offer classes, but like i said i'm broke and they probably wouldn't let me enroll it into my major if i tried to go through the school to do it since it wouldn't make sense.

what kind of website is signingsavvy? because it shows a list of words even though some of them are repeated or use the same sign. Is that website PSE?

I'd look at ASLPro.com instead

Yes it is. I agree with you, but I've clearly offended you and everyone on here perhaps and now you're just willing to teach me?... I'm skeptical. I've only wanted a teacher, but if I make videos it'll open me up to more rejection, right? I mean you did say i'd get an ear full and an eye full if we met.

We didn't say we'd teach you - we said if you made some youtube videos we'd offer our comments on how to improve.

For practicing, there are tons of ASL students here for you to practice with (in the stickies section) ... Start there.

If you came up to me and "pretended to be deaf" - you bet you'd get an ear and eyeful ... If you came up to me as a person saying they were learning ASL and wanted to practice, I'd be completely pleasent and likely even set up coffee.

Prentending to be hoh/deaf is a massive cultural, and social faux pas which will alienate you from the Hoh/Deaf community faster than anything. It's a huge mistake - and something you need to not do again.

If I saw you signing and I just walked up to you and started signing, would you ask me if I was hearing or deaf? When I went to the restaurant, I didn't pretend like I couldn't hear, I just didn't use my voice, so people just assumed and I guess that's where the pretense came from. It was more like a way to put myself in someone else's shoes and see if I could get them to sign with me.

Isn't it silly to keep replying to silly one..??

Hearing people, at the emotional level of yours, take it easy. Most of your posts are not helping her at all. I did not say that I agree with all of you and agree with cylly1.

but i dislike how hearing people preached her in the harsh way when it comes to the Deaf issue.

for what reason you do that, would you ask someone for brail menu...why don't you just ask deaf person to sign with you or go to deaf club....you better be careful who you sign to they may understand and think you barking mad...it not hard to see what you doing if deaf bsl/asl watching you
