Something terrible wrong!

It sounds like from T2 (Terminator 2), that where 2 boys are playing with real guns at gas station.

wow... I thought the shotgun inside the car is locked. extremely tragic!

3 years old don't know better. They are just babies.

Ohhh they're smarter than you think. Believe me, I have an early childhood educator for a mother.

As for this three year old... he obviously did not know the consequences of his actions as he is so young. This is still disturbing nonetheless. I bet as he grows older and understands what he did, he will probably feel guilty.

Anyway, this story is fishy. Where was the parental supervision? And how did the kid get a hold of the gun without the police officer stopping him?

its sad but the article doesn't say much. accidents do happen.

Why was the firearm in the driver's side door? Accident or not, this tragedy could have been prevented if the officer wasn't so careless with his firearm.

Yea, that is why I was stratching my head!

Wonder why the safety wasn't on the gun?....and a 3 yr. old able to pull the trigger?...must have been a strong 3 yr. old!....

Whomever the gun belonged to IMO should be held responsible. The safety lock should have been intact!

Really crazy and hard to believe this....

no the shotgun's usually at the middle - between driver and passenger seat. it's for backup in case the situation requires officer to use heavy firearm. I've always thought the shotgun's locked in the place but I'm not sure about that.

just because safety's on doesn't mean it's child-proof. it's just one button or a switch. Anybody including 3-years old can switch it off. and yes anybody can pretty much pull a trigger. it's as easy as clicking a button on your computer mouse.

I've never known of anyone "teaching a 3 yr. old" how to unlock the safety on a gun/shotgun! So the father was a police officer....I always thought that their guns were always on safety....if the shotgun's safety was already off, then the father should be held responsible....if it was on, and the 3 yr. old "knew how" to unlock it, then again, the father is responsible! NO guns should even be around a 3 yr. old child.

kids are smart. they probably figured it out themselves. or maybe the safety wasn't on. who knows? The gun safety lock is not childproof so....

read this similar article on the news.com.au two days ago, and this happened between NYE or NYD. Damn.

I have to say... Something is terrible wrong in this picture.

A cop? Cop owned SUV, this makes his SUV an easy target for thieves because it got gun in it. I am sure the cops are required to lock their firearms inside their vehicles. I am not sure why it is not locked in the first place.

I am sorry, I can't see this as an accident, no way! Human error? No way too. It seems to be purely CARELESS! Totally neglection, so whats their excuse? I don't think they will be able to come up with an excuse that is acceptable.

Well where were the adults at that time? and it wasn't really an accident. It is the gun owner's responsibility to know what he should do with his gun. Either put his gun somewhere that is completely reach out of children or lock his truck. But he did a VERY terrible job at hiding his gun. He should be suspended or fired for this shit.

It isn't rocket science on how you can use a gun...even a monkey can shoot guns.

I still don't think the kids know better. Most preschoolers don't understand that when someone died, they are gone for good. I know plenty of death related incidents done by preschoolers as far as pets. I think it was all an accident (even the article say so) and that I don't think preschoolers are as "evil" (as you said "smarter" than we think). If they were, they probably just start torturing animals first for fun.

I still blame the parents or whoever suppose to be watching them.

I do think this child know how to use a gun, he probably seen his father use it many time. Like our son tried to drive because he seen us do it.

Terribly tragic. 3 year olds don't realise the deadly consquences of handling guns. Thinking it was fake. Nevertheless, it's sad. :( Would of been nice to know what made the kid decide to pick up a gun & shoot?
