Some people don't realize that talking too loud doesn't make you hear any better

LOL @ Liza, Defee and kuifje75

I could use that advice next time someone is shouting at me.

I get so embarrassed when they shout, other people stare at us when this person who is shouting and it just really felt awaked. :ugh2:
lol yeah some people would think that the person who was shouting at you must be weird or something lol

Use hearing aides, you can hear from those people loud or low or normal. I do used it but I hate when I dont use HA then my voice go HIGH pitch... If I still use my HA then I would put myself low and normal.

People not know how LOUD they speak like blackie does! WOW I can hear you that far! heh

Keep in mind that this happens to a lot of different people. I've seen people raise their voices to blind people before.....enough so the blind person says 'I'm blind....not deaf'.

One of these days a smart-ass blind person is going to say to the next person that hollers at him, "Hey, thanks, now I can see!! :laugh2:

LOL......

Jeez, sometimes during a meeting or gathering, if there is a tv, someone would really crank up the volume, and I tell them that it makes no difference, it is like making the room brighter so the blind can see better.
Sighhh.

I've not noticed people shouting at me that much, I think Im quite lucky because I "appear" to be hearing: Im quite a good lipreader, everyone says that my speech is really good and my hair hides my hearing aids.

I went out last night and had two different reactions when people found out that I was deaf. The first time, I was at a bar with my friend and a guy come up to me and started talking, my friend told him that I was deaf (I never tell strangers that Im deaf, but my friends and family usually end up telling them). He started making his mouth huge when he spoke to me - the typical reaction I get!

The second time last night was to my friend, some guy was following her around trying to talk to her and she wasn't interested in him (she's hearing but she's doing the Deaf Studies course with me, she knows BSL) so to get rid of him she started pretending she was deaf. But to our surprise he didn't start talking weirdly he actually started to fingerspell what he was saying. We were shocked cos we thought he was all muscles and no brain!!

Other situations are where my old teachers would bring out a video for us to watch. I would often ask if it had subtitles and usually they didn't, it didn't bother me that much as I expected it, but the teachers would go all embarrassed and say what if I put your radio aid transmitter by the tv. I told them loads of times that it didn't work if they did that, but they went ahead and did it anyway

P.S Sorry for the long post! I didn't realise I typed that much!

It doesn't happen just to Deaf people. I notice that when someone doesn't understand English, the English-speaking person speaks louder. Ha! Like louder words will magically become Spanish or Chinese!

In my case, people usually exaggerate their lip movements after I tell them that I am deaf. Don't they realize how gross it is when I have to look right into their mouth? There are times when I can see what they just ate. Sometimes, they spit on me and I make a yucky face to remind them Im not that stupid.

I have a relative that does this when talking with deaf people and it's so embarrasing. He either shouts at them or talks so slow and deliberately to "help" them read his lips. I even tell him to just talk normally and use appropriate facial expressions. But I think he just does it out of habit now.

I have seen people start talking loudly to people who don't understand English too, like how is that supposed to help anything?

I guess I am lucky......I have never run into people who talk louder for me. Although I have noticed that my friends tend to unconciously hyperarticulate and overenunicate so I can hear better. Every time I return from a long break, I always have to remind them to speak better for my benifit.

Lol, just as there are many sorts of people, there are all sorts of breath odors. Let me tell you, you will long remember a garlic-saturated "Hiss a goot chob!" from a well-meaning person!

Also there are times when people tried to talk to you while you reading their lips sometimes they intend to be crewing gum and talk the same time, It's like looking at a cow's mouth while eating hay, Should I say "moooo"

I remember 1 time at work, this person was shouting right into my ear.. I keep turning and tell the person that I was NOT hearing from that ear.. I am D E A F I have to read your lip... The person Keep on doing that till I got so fed up and I turn around and said "are you out of breath yet ????" She said "What you mean ?" I said Get it.. I am not like you with my ears! I have to read your lip NOT LIKE YOU Got it ??? SHe turn REDBEET face and said "why the hell you didn't tell me" I said "well, maybe you should stop smoking tokes!"

this was in 1986 when I used to work in a carwash!

Kids! this reminds me of my kids chewing up their gums.. I often try not to let them buy gums.. They know my way.. when THEY want to talk to me.. They must remove gum out of their mouth! cuz you can't hear and understand them clearly..

Cheri... my father used to stay, Close your mouth when chewing gum because you sound like a cow" to any of us.... They get sick of hearing us eating at dinner like that too So they often remind us to chew with mouth close!

Eeekk that is soo oooo to remember the memories Now it's our turn.. Hehe

Yes as for Adult or other kids.. I have to ask them You mind repeating for me or remove gum.. so This nurse tend having gum.. she knows my way she would put gum on side of mouth and talk to me.. no problem there!
