Have introduced myself on the forum, however am now after some guidance from parents who have learned later in childhood that their child is HOH.

Is there any advice, or guidance? I guess its just a matter now of being advised by specialists - but what will be different for my son from now on? What realistic expectations should we have?

Can he learn sign language easily?

you can try hearing aids. I know he is 10 years old so he probably used to the life he have now. but see if he can learn sign language too.

btw, have he ever had a hearing test before diagnose with Aspergers? Just wondering because it is easy to mistaken a deaf person as Autism or ADHD if they haven't rule out hearing issue first.

Hi Lighthouse - NO they DIDN'T! Can you believe it. I went with it, for 4 years, but when he was doing so well in many respects, in ways you wouldn't expect for ASD, I started to disbelieve. Plus he was 5 when he was diagnosed. Apparently that is far too young to diagnose. It was 2005, and I think I was caught up in the hype (that's no disrespect to autists, as I have a great respect for the condition, as my daughter is Aspie).

And yes, I can understand why the diganosis came about as it presents similarly, but its not the same. ASD explained some things about my son, but not all things about him. This is so much more straightforward, and explains everything from our point of view.

He has had a hearing test at school, and the LS teacher has rung me apologising for his test (hey, it is what it is, right?). She said it was very odd because... I finished her sentence for her: he tripped over all the short words, like 'of', 'it', 'the'... and managed to ace the big words like 'happen' 'experience' and 'phenomenon'...:roll:.... she said OMG you have observed this too? YUP!

His loss is 60-80% but he blitzed the speech audiometry. HOW confusing!!!!

He might need FM system. Best ask Australian Hearing Service to outfit him with Hearing Aids and have them organise a FM for him. His school will have to make that adjustment such as his teacher will have to wear this FM system too, so he can hear more clearly.

He can pick out what colour hearing aids he wants. :)

Also have him sit in front row in the classroom is a good idea.

Always turn on caption on TV and DVD.

There's always Auslan.

In case his hearing worsens then he might need notetaker or interpreter in school.
