Okay, welp. I have no idea where to start besides my name. I'm Ashley, I'm hearing and I guess you can say I am here to learn outside my school walls for ASL and the deaf community. I just started my ASL program, so you've guessed it my signing is barely there, but my passion for the culture is huge. Speaking of culture, not to sound offensive, but what are some challenges you or someone you know as a deaf/HOH/ deafened/etc face? Like I said I'm not deaf, but it also drives me insane knowing that it's the 21st century and we still can't accommodate deaf people, but we expect them to accommodate us as a hearing culture. Anyway that is all for now, let me know what you think.

What do you mean "we still can't accommodate deaf people" What accommodations do you think we need?

I think of one , I wish businesses would make their out going messages loud enough so I can heard which number I need to press to get the right person. I had no idea which # I had to press when calling a DR. so I just press #2 to get any person.

but well, if "loud enough" for you mean an ear splitting scream for someone else... hmm dilemma, dilemma... :hmm:

Fuzzy

Yes... Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeessss.... causing the hearies to lose their hearing slowly one at a time gradually forming a deaf army! Our time will come.... Sooooooon..... SOON! Buahahaha!!!

I understood the OP perfectly clearly. And the answer to your question is...

THAT IS THE PROBLEM!

When one lost the sense of sound or never experience the sense of sounds will NEVER going to be able to accommodate for hearing people. It is really next to impossible expectation from Hearing people.

What I see in the hearing world. Their number one universal method of communication though one of these 5 senses is sounds. Understandable that it is easier for them to understand and communicate better when using the sounds because it is in every damn direction, unlike where Deaf person requires visual, meaning light is needed where hearing people can communicate in total darkness very easy.

Just that it is too bad that they (Hearing people) don't realize that there is no way we can use sounds to communicate equivalent to hearing people.

I think the answer is at home not with the doctors office. There are home phones that have some pretty loud volume controls.

How are the deaf not accommodated? It's not an accommodation as much as a language barrier that can only be helped as much as the hearing want to learn sign. And why would they unless they had to? They are not missing out on anything; they live in a hearing world. Neither side is the bad guy, and pitting them against each other is definitely not the way to go.

Yikes! Okay bare with me I have a learning disability and not everything I say or type will come off how I want it to so again sorry if I was offensive that is the last thing I want to do. I mean accommodations like if a deaf persona wanted to go see a movie...as a hearing world maybe we could offer more movies with caption instead of only certain movies or at certain times. I didn't mean accommodations as a bad thing. And I am not by all means trying to make hearing ppl and deaf people not like each other either. I disagree that hearing people aren't missing outdone anything when they choose not to learn sign. They miss out on the opportunity of understanding, learning and seeing a whole new culture and the world in a totally different light. And I just mean it frustrated me when hearing people expect all deaf people to be able to speak but refuse to learn sign. I myself am trying to learn here. Its like the other day a profess asked me how my teacher made it through his day because he is deaf. Or when I've seen deaf people walk into a music store and have someone ask for a recommendation of music for that deaf person and the staff gives a weird look and questions their motives. Again I am not trying to be horrible or rude or offensive I am just trying to learn so I won't be ignorant pr come off like that. Like I said please try to understand I have a learning disability

Tsk, tsk.. No excuses please.

I can see any movie I want at any time thanks to the new digital captioning systems. Almost anyone in any city can now. So you are a little behind the times now.

And as for the hearing, I don't expect them to learn sign. I don't have any compelling need to communicate with anyone that I don't have common interests with.

See that's why I am here to learn. You maybe have the technology for the movie theater's near you but I know my town doesn't. And its not an excuse just like deaf people live without hearing I live with a learning disability. Its not an excuse its my way of life so try to understand like I ak trying to understand you and other deaf people. Are you saying if someone who is hearing and can't sign you d9nt have similar interests because you can't communicate? I find that hard to believe. Maybe the movies wasn't the best example but that's what I got.

What do you find hard to believe? That I don't care if a hearing person signs?

Or that I don't care to communicate with someone who doesn't share my interests?

It doesn't really have that much to do with hearing or deaf, signing or not.

It read like you meant you can't have interests with people just because you can't communicate and that's how it sounded like you were referring to deaf and hearing and no I get the whole not caring if people don't learn to sign.

You got it backwards. Just because you can sign doesn't mean I will be interested in you.

I took that phrase to mean that even though there are things that exist in many places they are not getting installed and/or used.

I was just trying to see what would better help people in the Deaf culture I.e technology that may have already been in use or maybe hasn't been invented yet. Or what struggles do you have within the hearing world. I didn't mean it by anyway means yo come off as offensive.

Ok It's my experience, lots of technology are already made which is no problem however some hearing people made choices not to spent on technology thingy for people who can't hear and spend on something else so useful.

For example, the movie theaters, they offer only 10 glasses limited for people who can't hear and wear the goggles to read the closed caption. One goggle costs pretty expensive I think 1 thousands or more dollars. Some hearing people complains how annoying the closed captain on the movie screens. I dislike wearing the goggle. I rather having the movie theater to have open closed caption but they don't.

My office, at first, they did not have fire alarm lights years ago that they didn't chose until the ADA law requires. So they are forced to spend $$$ on technology for whose people cant hear.

you see what I am saying? educate them to be accepting the varied of disabled people that they MUST spend $$$ on technology so the varied of disabled people can go.

so There are plenty of technology, no problem but will they be willing to buy for the varied of disabled people????? that is the problem.

Everyday, I have to educate hearing people if they don't use their heads. Many times I always tell them how come older people who complains that they cant hear why don't the company provides more of closed captain on screen anywhere so older people wont complain. Some of them don't like wearing hearing aid. For example my dad needs a hearing aid. He can afford it but don't want to wear it. So he has a brand cool glasses. I bet that he WOULD read rather than wearing hearing aid. HOpe you understand what I m saying.
