This is a one-word idiom needing two ASL signs. They go together as a slightly derogatory term for a very intelligent person.


1. Knock one H hand against the other and pivot them down, as into a bowl to be scrambled.

2. Touch the tips of the right fingers to the right temple, them in a semi-circle to the right jaw.

While we're waiting, here's a Valentine's Day Bonus Special:

This ASL idiom you won't have to guess (courtesy of ASLPro's "onversational phrases"). The English version is "Fall head over heels in love."

To say it in ASL, place the tip of the horizontal right index finger at your slightly parted lips, then dive the finger down to the open left hand held palm up, waist high. Skim the right index finger off the palm like a touch-and-go airplane and point it outward.

Now all you have to do is sign "I" in front of it and afterwards point to your valentine. Voilà! You're an instant romantic.

ASL Idiom: right hand in front of you palm facing towards left in five shape hand. Left hand has d shape and with left index finger draw a line accross the bottom of right palm toward thumb. At the same time wiggle fingers of right hand as you would in the sign for wait. To finish the sign close fist of right hand with facial expression "wow".

Meaning: going from novice in some task to very professional in same task

Ok the answer to this one is "Highly Skilled" Can any one explain the signs on this one because I haven't got a clue.


In the mean time here is a funny silly one I made up. Remember to think homonym and silly when guessing the answer.

Sign: bovine animal (Y shaped hand forming a horn of temple, can't write the word or you'll guess it too easy.

Sign: numbers

Sign: machine

Meaning: an electronic device used to manipulate large amounts of numerical data


I'll be back later, not sure when because I threw my back out this weekend and I can't sit here at the computer very long. Going to chiropracter tomorrow. dragging myself back to bed now

Hey Chase, Can you guess this one? Here is another way to sign it.

Sign: bovine animal using Y hand on side of temple to make a horn
Sign: the letter Q then place the Q on your cheek and twist it in a downward motion ( just as you would with the L shaped hand for the sign that means "another time in the future"

Does this have anything to do with the old advice columns in newspapers, like "Dear Abby" and "Ann Landers"? My grandmother used to call them "aunt agony" letters.

OK my 12 year old son came up with this one.

Make a closed O fist over the left side of your chest and tap there repeatedly as in the sign for consuming food. Then point to another person.

English idom that means: "I want you to be extremely jealous of my accomplishments"
 
Oh no! I promised each of my kids if they came up with an idiom for me to post here that I would put it up and tell which one of them did it. But I didn't count on my little 7 year old inventing one of his own! I promised to post it. Oh well.

Meaning: Something that is of a greater size than this thing that is being signed about.
Hint: One of his Uncles is a Plumber and the Uncles make these kinds of jokes when the women are not present. (sigh) This idiom was just invented by my 7 year old son. See if you can guess it. :smile:
