Hi

Am new here. Was wondering if anyojne knows of any free sign language lesson podcasts? Looking to learn and I learn best through actually seeing things done and where I travel alot with my ipod I love being able to have podcasts to watch and this would be a good way to learn. So does anyone know of any free sign lesson podcasts?

TIA
Dave

Great idea...I don't know of any but maybe someone will get going on this.

Well unfortunately not knowing Sign Language and being new to I-Pod I can't help in any way but I have seen just how good pod catss can be to get info across to people on the go and a sign language video podcast would be great cause the user can watch the video lessons and learn while on the go. Then if there's a question could come to a forum such as this and ask questions regarding a certain lesson where there are volunteers who know the lesson and can help answer the users questions. Would be a great tool!

After doing a Google search for "sign language podcast" I came across a website/podcast for baby signs, so apparently this concept has been done before. However, I couldn't find any podcasts that specifically teach sign.

I don't have time to do this right now, but you could try googling for "vodcast" - I've heard video podcasts called this before.

ISMI Nope nothing came to light using vodcast. Google popped up with just under 800 results but nothing of interest connecting to this topic. Thanks though.

And thanks hear again found those same ones but being their on baby level am assuming most are more baby type signlanguage used in general not so much the normal sign language most of us are thinking here. And no problem with the doubel post would be nice if they would turn on the edit and delete options in forum so users could edit their posts if errors are in them or delete posts of their own like in your double post you could have deleted but guess they have those turned off for some freason. Oh Well.

I've always advocated sign lessons should be free to anyone who wants to learn it. We are defeated by deaf groups who make a living out of the classes, so want the fees. There is NOTHING to stop any native sign user from producing lessons themselves for downloading, look at it as a means of widening access. Classes don't teach rationality of sign so there is a gap there. I think the advent of culture and all the rest of it, made sign language profitable, this goes against the grain as far as I am concerned since it reduced sign language/lip-reading to an 'option' and not a NEED (Which it is to many deaf people), disabled via deafness.

It's now a 'hobby' language. They even charge children and relatives of deaf to learn now, it's a disgrace, but a system now SUPPORTED by their own deaf groups. Taking exams in the UK can now run into £1,000 sterling, this, creates a BARRIER since those who cannot afford lessons but genuinely want to help and support deaf are priced out. If you want to know why support for deaf people is so dire, look no further.... to add confusion note the madness of TWO rival 'BSL' systems vying for national credibility, the CACDP's and the BDA's in Britain. It's now ALL about money, and nil about need.

Now deaf people are cultural, and not disabled, everyone has to foot the bill !

I don't know if this is an option for you, but I have access to a video library run by the Department of Education called the Captioned Media Project. A few of their videos, including a series of ASL education films, are available as RealMedia streams on the web; it's not too hard to save them to disk if you do some fiddling, and they could probably be converted with some effort to mpg or quicktime or whatever iTunes prefers. So if you're deaf or hard of hearing, you could try that.

Passivist that's what I love though about the net it breaks down cost barriers. I mean like for instance if you open up the podcasts section in I-Tunes (Program manager for ipod for those unfamilar with ipod and itunes) and search there are all sorts of languages now being offered for free to those wanting to learn. All you do is subscribe (free in alot of cases) to their podcast and when you open itunes it will download the latest classes which you then import into ipod to take with you on the road. I have several languages that I would like to learn I have their classes but a matter of finding time to sit down with them but have Fench, Spanish, Gaelic even and I would also like to learn some Italian but with all that a matter of finding the time lol. But a podcast for sign would be so cool being it's a visual language. Doesn't do much good to just tell a user the sign if they can't see it and sometimes pictures on a site don't always work well as it lacks the suttle motions of some of the signs. If signing is anything like spoken language sometimes the same word can mean different things with a slight pitch change. Assume something like this might occur in signing as well but just guessing on that.

And Ismi that would be good if you can send the links there might be a way to convert them using some media converts but would need to fiddle with that to see if they would work.

Yeah I-Pods are great. I know we're going away today and I have mine all loaded up with both music and video and podcasts.

All pod casts are are short segment either video or audio clips that someone somewheer has created with many different topics and themes. I know I have several that are language based. One for French and one for Japanese. Both of these are both video and audio. Or alot of times too you can buy commercial podcasts of news shows or TV shows and I think their even doing movies now a days on them where you can watch ful length featured movies on your ipod and all the size of a cell phone or so.

That's the reason I asked about a signing podcast as that would work great on an ipod as the creator could create a video podcast with individual lessons where the user can watch them actually signing and hence learn while their on the go. Would be a great way for those interested to learn how to sign. Sadly I don't know how to sign or create podcasts so....reason I posted to ask if anyone know of a source of these in case someone had already created some.

Hobby? I have never heard of sign language being referred as such. Does a foreign language professor render his/her teaching services for free? Granted, there are free sites and resources offering self learning materials, like a list of verbs, and all the like. But not the same as having somebody showing you the ropes personally, huh? How much do you think that person's time is worth? I don't refer to only the service of teaching sign language, but all other services rendered. A fun example: You can get sex for free from your partner - because it is a two way street, but you still have to pay for it when you use a prostitute because you expect to get serviced.

You should also consider writing to different organizations asking for what you want to happen, too. Maybe ask at the local deaf club chapter in your area about donating sign language classes to the "community" in an effort to bridge the gap you see. You could offer to be a volunteer in some capacity for a deaf club or a deaf event, and they could give you free classes in exchange. Or ask them to sponsor a social gathering for the purpose of learning signs (and maybe gossip too??) from each other over coffee and cake. You never know!

By the way, you might get results faster if you use honey instead of vinegar. :D

If a person truely enjoys what they are doing then charging shouldn't matter as they should want to share what they love with the world. And thanks to the internet that is exactly what alot of people are doing. Sharing what they love with the world. Money doesn't always have to be a factor.

No, money isn't always a factor - but there's the concept of equal energy exchange.

Internet is wonderful :)

Well in my case I feel money should never be a factor I mean if I enjoy doing something I should be willing to teach others what I enjoy and same other way but then I am strange that way lol

Have you tried youtube.com? Type in asl, and you get a lot of interesting vids. I've seen asl students using them as part of their homework or practice. I once saw this clip of two funny deaf teenagers teaching people how to cuss in asl.

No, you're not strange. Other people are! ;)

That's nice you feel that way. It's that I've learned that people don't take the things I want to teach seriously unless I set a tangible value on them. You might have luck with organizations that wouldn't mind donating signing classes via podcasts! (pssst, you might wanna check out signcasts as a search keyword - there is a website SignCasts - but dont know if it's what ur looking for - its more like vblog) I think it's a great idea to spend time learning a new language on travels, and hope this is done. Are you looking to get certified or it is for a personal reason?
