I am profoundly deaf with lass than 20% in my left ear, I am going totally deaf and I am trying to decide if I should get the CI but I need to get enough information on it. I have been thinking and trying to decide if I want one for 9 years now. I am scared of surgery because I feel like I will possibly die in it due to the breathing problem I have. Can ya'll help me decide I am freaked and unsure about the CI, and everything. I have lived my life with a hearing aid for 16 years of my life. and close to half of those 16 years my mom has abused me with a wooden paddle to my face, so my ears are scarred and my nerves are damaged. Since I am profoundly deaf since age 12 from abuse I have been doing all I can to keep my 20% that I had but since early this year its been going down and I feel like I want to break down and cry because I love the sounds that I do hear if I hear any at all. I very rarely take my HA out because I dont want the silence too long unless I am sleeping, washing my hair, or dont want to hear my family screaming at me. Well, that is my story and the truth I feel like there are so many things shoving me around and all, I really thought I would reach out to the deaf community and the forum here and see how everyone here can help me make my pick about CI.

If you are going to be cruel or rude about this at any cost please dont post.

Attn mods: please leave my thread here because I need all the information I can thanks!!

Best is talk to your doctor and Audiogolist about it. It is totally UP to you to get CI or not.

If you cannot get enough speech and sound information through your HA then you can be a candidate for CIs. Yet this should be discussed with a specialized ENT physician and audiologist.See a specialized ENT physician ASAP.He/She may inform you all about this issue.

Also,I'm sorry to hear what you have experienced with your loss . Been there and have smilar problems. Take care

I have been a candiate for 9 years, but I have not made a choice. Also I have been told I can have it when I am ready to have it. But I am so scared and everything. That is why I ask hereto discuss it and all. But I have lived like I said for 16 years with a HA. So I am still getting benefits from the HA.

Of course , every surgery contains risks . You cannot avoid these. There is a possibility that the CI might not work at all. You said you have breathing problems if I don't recall wrong. If you were told that there isn't any risk about your problem when you get the surgery then don't be afraid of that.

You should make your own choice between hearing aid and cochlear implant. After that, go on your way of life.

Life has so many risks !!! We live by taking risks.

Good luck :)

Geeze your mother beaten you up with a wooden paddle? Goodness I'm so sorry to hear that this had happened to you and that was soo wrong...I do understand how you feel about missing hearing sounds and etc, I feel the same way sometimes, but its has to be up to you, no one else, so whatever choice you do make, I'm with you all the way!

Good luck :)

It does sound like you could benefit from a CI - loving to hear sounds is a really great start. When I got mine it made me realise how much I had struggled with hearing aids after my loss got worse and I don't know about you but I felt tired all the time and sounds were not as good as I remembered.

With your medical issues and surgery I'm not sure. If you go through a proper medical evaluation they will take all of this into account and make a recommendation based on those factors. They do not allow very risky cases to proceed, obviously because of the risk of litigation and for the patient's best interest. Is your breathing difficulties made worse by general anaesthetic? I realise trust issues are a big thing for you and so it would be good if you could find an interpreter that you trust and together grill the audiologist/surgeon about this and only proceed if you feel good about it.

I'm really sorry to hear about the way your mother treated you. :( That's awful.

Best wishes with whatever you decide. We're here to give you support either way that you want to go - whether to get a CI or to accept the silence.

Well, since you are a very good lipreader and a very good signer (you can understand most speech fine without your hearing aids in and without anyone making any sounds, which is amazing), you are in the ideal position--you have nothing to lose by going for it. You won't need to depend on it, which is good if you get it and decide you don't like it, or if it fails. I'd say go for it if that's what you really want. You can always go back to being deaf because you are good at it.

Best of luck to you whichever way you decide. :thumb:

Are you happy with your hearing aids' service? Why do you want a CI? I can promise you from my son's experience, you will benefit from CI in terms of speech clarity (which goes hand in hand with how much you hear) if you've always relied on your hearing aids.

I'm still undecided on CI and with every passing day, I just feel it's too little too late already. I'll always live vicariously through my wife, son and daughter, anyway :)

Good luck, Kim, but make sure your heart is 100% with your gut decision to go with the CI.

No it's not too late for you. CI is never too late with anyone! :)

i agree. and well i know how it is with parents being like that. all though i haven't had my face beaten, i have been subjected to my dad and stepmom. haha. they are just ***holes. and i can't stand them. thats why im now living with my mother. so if you just need a shoulder to cry on im here for you. ^^

my audiologist said no......I am so pissed!! I am like you didnt even let me talk to you on it or anything. This is a different audiologist than the one I had back at age 12.

It's up to you.

If you have experience with hearing loss then stop wear hearing aids because it can damage your hearing ability and it does happen to some people.

I know its up to me but my audiologist said I am not a candiate no more. and that just pisses me off...I am like all the others I had until this one said I was. That is so pissy.:pissed: :pissed:

Unless your audiologist works in a CI center I really don't see how he/she could determine if you are a canidate. With a profound hearing loss you probably are unless the damage is to the hearing nerve. If you really do want to persue a CI get an appointment at a CI for the hearing tests, if they find you qualify based on what you hear you will then do further tests to find out if you can be inplanted.

The audiologist/dispenser that I've used to purchase my HA's from gave me a lecture on CI's when I went in for adustments to my HA's, he was very against them. Of course in his case if I went CI he's lose a costomer. But what the heck, I've sent lots of people his way over the years. He has since sold his business and hopefully enjoying his retirement. :)

So if you really want a CI go for it. :)

I have some breathing problems myself and have ben "under the knife " a lot you just nead a good anstigologist(sp) , i would find out why you are no longer a canidate and work from their.
