Shooter on Navy Ship Identified

Where does it say he had clearance from TSA? Normally for jobs that get you on bases there's a different group that does clearances. Like the one that cleared the guy who shot up the Navy Yard.

When I worked at the Navy Base, I had to get my ID directly from the military, and I had to keep it with me at ALL times, for clearance purposes.

You weren't a truck driver, so that's a different category.

Your ID card was for access to government facilities, not for a clearance to classified materials.

Yeah, I know. Card was green. Higher clearance cards are color coded, correct?

Savage, an employee of North Carolina-based Majette Trucking, drove his 2002 Freightliner onto base with showing a valid Transportation Worker Identification Credential, NCIS said. But the TWIC alone shouldn’t have been sufficient to grant him access to the base.

“The NCIS investigation has confirmed that Savage had no reason or authorization to be on Naval Station Norfolk,” the NCIS press release said. “The chain of events that allowed Savage entry to the installation and the ship are under investigation.”

No. Green and blue, one is for contractors, one is for people who are employed by the government directly. Color coding clearance levels isn't really safe. Forget to take off your ID and go to the grocery store, someone sees you have top secret clearance, passes that on to someone who wants to create trouble, etc.

Yes, this definitely needs more looking into. Something doesn't smell right. At the very least, protocols and training need to be reviewed.

Definitely. I couldn't figure out how someone with just that TSA badge could get onto a base.
