What sensitivity do you tend to use in normal situations? Such as being outside, store, restaurants, traffic, home, etc?

I used to have mine at 20 but lately I keep it at 5 now.

umm... this isn't gonna help i believe.

the audiologist told me whatever comfortable level u are on.. will be automatically set on 12 for sensivity level while doing the mapping.

if i love 18th sensivity level the audiologist will set that 18 into 12 on next mapping.. thats what i was told.

so i normally have 12.. but i have other number for other reason for example if i'm in noisy enviroment i keep it lower. i don't like the auto-sensivity feature its too quiet for me.

I have mine at the default level of 12 most of the time but if it's a noisy environment I will turn it down to whatever is comfortable.

My audie sets the sensitivity at 20 to start with. If I am expecting someone at the door (like FedEx last Monday) I turn up the sensitivity all the way up to 20 so I don't miss the knock, but for most situations it is at 5. If I am at poker I turn it down to 2 or even less cause there is like 100 people in a room and that is way too much input for my poor brain! Can you say sensory overload?! If I am listening to music via a cord (CD player or ipod or whatever) I set it at 0 to block out all the noises, it is very difficult to hear music over the traffic or other environmental noises.

If you listen to music using your telecoil setting then that automatically blocks out all the background noise and there is no need to adjust the sensitivity. I have an ipod too and use it with the telecoil setting using an ordinary pair of headphones and with the audio cable. It's lovely just you and the music!

Ask your audie to to put on the telecoil if she hasn't already. All it requires is an adjustment to the custom preferences.

Thanks for the tip!!!

I do not have an Ipod but I have a Sidekick 3 which has a MP3 player in it, but unfortunately my cord for my CI does not fit in the slot for the SK3. I'm wondering if buying a pair of headphones would be cheaper than buying an actual MP3 player. If so, what brand would you recommend? What model?

I would check first that the Sidekick 3 itself is telecoil compatible. As for the headphones I'm not sure, mine are just a plain "made in China" brand that I picked up from a popular audio hardware outlet here. It had big ears that covered the whole area including where the microphone on the speech processor lies.

How do I find out if the SK3 is telecoil compatible?

When I first started off for the first year or so, I put it on 10. Later on, I decided that I would put it on 12 as that is the default setting. That is where it has been since...

depending on how many songs you think you need...I did just purchase an mp3 for about 24$. I think it was 256 mb, holds up to 120 songs, would that be enough? Thing i finally figured out how to get the music on the one I bought a year ago and actually get it to work so now really don't need the new one. What I liked about the new one is it was one that just plugs into the USB port so no wires. Oh well, I have a co worker who said she's buy it from me for her son, so i won't have wasted the money. So there are mp3's that don't cost alot. The Ipod shuffle is about $80 I have a daughter who got one, but she bought hers before the shrunk them, now there really tiny so easier to lose I would think.

one thing to think about when buying headphones is you might want to get noise canceling ones. They completely cover the ear and they help keep out the noise around you. If you go in an airplane and use headphones they are wonderful. My hubby uses them when driving tractor. With the CI regular headphones even if they cover the processor might not block out alot of the background noise. (of course the noise cancelling ones cost more) The ones we have also use a triple a battery. But in noisy situations they're well worth it.

I'd love to get the Ipod Shuffle but I can't understand lyrics so I wouldn't know which song I am picking/listening to. I need an Ipod Nano or similar so I can see what song I am listening to and see what I want to pick to listen to.

I guess I would say 5 since I am still learning about Sensitivity and not sure how it work....I kinda play around to see what I am confortable.

I don't know yet as I just got my sensistivy today at my 3rd mapping appt. Right now it's at a 12 w/ the volume being at a 6. She wants me to leave it like that for 4 days, using program 1 first then program 2 first at 2 days each. But I get to play around for 3 mos and tell her what works best for me. I also have program 3 and 4. Program 4 is my old program that I had when I came in, but it doesn't sound like it to me, everything sounds so damn quiet. WTH is up with that? heh.

Same here - I just got it today [well actually yesterday since it's 4 am now] - I don't even know how it all works so I'm a bit confused & have lotsa to play with. Right now I'm at a 12, but I've been going down to a 4-6. I can go all the way up to 20 for sensistivy and 9 for volume. Is that the same for all the other Freedom users?

Okay, imagine a bubble and you are inside it. The higher the sensitivity, the bigger the bubble you are in. You will hear more noises. The lower the sensitivity, the smaller the bubble is, you block out more noises, you hear only what is closer to you. Get the idea? Like if you have your sensitivity set at 2 or 3, you will only hear what is at your table and what is close to your table (like in a restaurant). If your sensitivity is at like 10 you hear everything in the room, and maybe sounds outside the room, too. The higher the sensitivity is, the bigger that bubble is. Maximium is 20 and I would say maybe as big as a parking lot, maybe even bigger. You would hear everything in that area. That's how my audiologist explained it to me.

Yes that's the same for me too. I never go higher than 12 though. I love Lucia's description of sensitivity!
