Seeking advice on choosing hearing aid brands

Many years ago, I walked into a ME, and had a hearing test. Same scenario, but, in addition, there were renovations going on next door, and someone was hammering. I have no idea if I had a loss at that time, but he said I did. :hmm:

The ad would be great for a SNL skit .
That would be even better.

I would have to agree, the ITE are not as good as the BTE and actually I find the BTE much more comfortable to wear.

Thanks for all the replies. I am sorry I have not been updating or replying back. I am currently dealing with an old injury bothering me so I have not been focusing on my ears. I think I will get the BTE, but I'll have to grow my hair out, as I have a shaved head. I can't recall where I put my results, but my audi said I am the worst he's ever seen for my age (30) who has hearing loss due to poor choices ;(

Once I get my injury taken care of, hearing is next!

Why do you need to grow your hair out because of BTE aids and not ITE aids? ITE aids are more noticeable. BTE aids can be really really small so your top of your ear hides it.

You can also get your BTE's to match your skin tone.

I got my hearing aids when I was just shy of 30. I was out for a walk with our young children one day and an older man, guessing 80 or so, stopped us to chat. He wanted to see the kids. As we were chatting he noticed my hearing aids and asked me about them. I told him my story. He then told me his kids had been after him for years to get HA's but he thought they made him look old :giggle:. He said that since I still looked young he was going inside to make an appointment with his dr. I was happy he saw my HA's. He was thrilled after he got his too.

@HOH-ME LOL!!! I'm so coming after my mom when I gave her an FYI since she can't hear my hearing aid feedback.

I think that is the best part about the BTE--NO FEEDBACK. My aids are in the shop and my old aids squeal, ALL the time....

well they can also make your ears stick out, I guess that would be more noticeable with a shaved head.

I always had to have the biggest amplifier I could get. The problem was feedback and the fact that I worked outdoors in the arctic, in places where the rain just hoses down, in constant wind, salt spray and fog, massive heat and noise, wearing a huge variety of hardhats, raingear, and cold weather, gear. Makes me tired just thinking about it. I could have been a lab study for industrial strength hearing aids. I paid for the hearing aids I destroyed on a regular basis out of pocket. Those were the BTE's of the day. Feedback, large size, lousy sound discrimination, not water or dust resistant, and fragile. Then technology improved and I could get the expensive full size ITE's that were at least protected from some of the problems- they did not freeze easily and the hardhat did not hit them still wind was a problem, rain not so much. They were not hidden well filling up my whole ear and I maxxed out the amplifiers and still was not hearing well enough. Still they made my life easier.

Those little ITE's were never a solution for me even though ?audioligists? trying to sell me on them. There are a lot of costs in those little ITE's.

Then technology improved again and BTE's are now AWESOME. They are not huge but pack a big punch, lots of amplifier, lots of sound discrimination, water resistant, have extra features, different colors, tough plastic, and thank you thank you not much in the way of feedback. The audi can save you money like for phonak brand- I use, by getting you the aid you need with less frills but the same basic amplifier and great sound.

There are people on here that know way more than I and are way smarter than I as well but I can say I have crash tested HA's for a very long time and the BTE's like phonak are doing mighty good.

Still there are a couple things about the full size ITE's I like better- ear protectors go on and off better, and they do not get knocked around. I never did like the way telecoils work but they do it better. I just cannot hear well enough with them all around.

On the cosmetic part I am past that so no help there really though I understand. If your hearing loss is moderate you may find something that works in small ITE aids and you can get pretty clever at positioning yourself and pushing buttons or using a pocket remote for changing sound programs. Technology is really moving now so it is worth checking out what is out there. Miracle Ear? Waste of time and money. Good luck!

The real reason I wanted ITE is because I have to put on muffs on and off due to work; not sure if they would interfere with the muff's doing their job. I can take em out, but the frequency of doing that would just be stupid. BTE are not a problem but I want to kind of "hide" them because I do not want to be moved from what I do now to another one just cause they think the noise might affect it more. I've grown deaf due to doing stupid shit at home, when I was young and stupid. I am now 30 and stupid and like what I do, so changing positions would affect me. I'm still deciding, but right now I have to take care of this injury.

Okay I see what you are saying. The little ITE's are good to a point depending on how much hearing loss you have. They and the full size ITE's do well with on and off earmuffs.
My full size ones never made it so I could hear anything with the earmuffs on.
Most people wear earmuffs and earplugs and can still hear through them enough to carry on conversation even with the noise going on.
Good luck on the injury!
