The season's first tropical storm could spin up in the Atlantic just off the coast of the Carolinas later this week, the National Hurricane Center said Monday.

Even if it doesn't become a tropical storm, winds and seas are likely to kick up along part of the East Coast beginning by the middle of the week. AccuWeather meteorologist Alex Sosnowski said. This could lead to beach erosion and coastal flooding, especially in the Carolinas.

Before the storm forms, locally heavy rainfall is also possible in southern Florida and the Bahamas from Monday night through early Wednesday, the Weather Channel said. Rip currents are also a danger along the east coast of Florida, the National Weather Service warned.

If it develops, the system would become a "subtropical" or "hybrid" system, which has elements of both a regular storm and a tropical storm. The distinction between tropical and subtropical means little other than how meteorologists classify the storm.

USA TODAY

First forecast: Below average hurricane season likely

If the storm gets a name, it would be Tropical Storm (or Subtropical Storm) Ana.

Typically, very few tropical storms or hurricanes form in May. From 1851 to 2014, there have only been 20 tropical storms and four hurricanes in May, according to Chris Landsea, the hurricane center's science and operations officer.

A hurricane has never hit the U.S. during May, though just three years ago, in May of 2012, Tropical Storm Beryl hit the East Coast with winds of 70 mph.

A tropical storm becomes a hurricane when its sustained winds reach 74 mph. The "official" start to the hurricane season is June 1.

I hope it doesn't interfere with our plans to go camping next week.

I hope those people in the affected areas stay safe in case.

I hope it doesn't interfere with our plans to go camping next week.

HOpe it doesn't ruin your camping plans! Too often we have had our camping plans ruined by rainy weather. Have fun!

We are going camping this weekend...looking forward to it!

, enjoy your camping, Reba and Shel! Reba, hope it works out and not more like rafting...

we went camping with a 5th wheel <truck pulling large trailer> some years ago..family friends camper. We stayed at State Parks and drove along the Great River Road in Western WI. Beautiful and such fun!

Seems it's headed for SC....my City is expected to get a lot of rain for several days straight also.

For the week-end or for a more extended stay?
Monday-Thursday. Less crowded than weekend.

Looks like any bad weather from the storm will be this week, not next week, so camping should be OK.

We could use some rain , it's getting dry out here . Gee I wonder if the storm could spoil Mother's day for some people .

Now they say the storm will be here until Sunday. It's been raining all afternoon, and sometimes windy.

Tropical storm warning issued for parts of the Carolinas

MIAMI (AP) - A tropical storm warning has been issued for parts of North and South Carolina as Ana approaches the U.S. coast.

The storm formed nearly a month before the Atlantic Hurricane season officially kicks off. The U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami said Friday that Ana's maximum sustained winds are near 45 mph (75 kph) with slight strengthening forecast during the next day or so.

The storm is centered about 180 miles (285 kilometers) south-southeast of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. The Hurricane Center says it's been nearly stationary over the last few hours but is expected to move north-northwest later in the day.

The tropical storm warning is in effect from the south Santee River in South Carolina to Surf City, North Carolina. The system is expected to deliver 2 to 4 inches of rain over the weekend.
