There is something to be said about ensuring the validity of data results. And when scientists cannot or refuse to hand over their data to other scientists to see if they can replicate the same results then the original data are suspect because they cannot be checked, validated or corroborated. This is essential in all scientific fields. Every scientists know that. You always keep your original data....and not "accidentally" have them thrown away. Doing so makes your data results worthless since validation cannot take place by others.
