I am not against religion at all, so before reading the following do take that into account.

I think that the consensus of why or why not some people do not prefer private schooling is the fact that some if not many of these schools, stand on a religious background. So God/V Mary/Jesus are examples of what the culture there follows, thus influencing the child while growing up.

That's just my two pieces however.

I am for public schools.

I don't like the elitism of private schools.

I think homeschooled people are not prepared for the harshness of the world.

I agree and would prefer to send my child to a public school but, public schools are not to great here so I may go for a private school.

I realize it is about to happen here. Please try to avoid the religious discussion with this thread, thanks ~

Hi
I think no kind of school is the panacea. For example, I would have liked to be homeschooled, because of my difficulties at school : too much background noise, the children not tender one another, always being rejected.... Mom couldn't stop working for financiary (or money) reasons, and she is against homeschool : too cocoon, not enough socialisation....

Another kind of debate can be interested : specialised school or classical school for disabled children ? Well, neither one nor the other solution is the panacea. If I hadn't been in the classical school, with hearies children, I wouldn't have the level I have in languages. But being in a deaf school may have saved me a lot of problems, like background noise problem (since we are 15 children, not 30 !!)

That makes sense. Everyone has different needs. Sorry you had a hard time in school. I didn't like my public school and would have loved to go to a private school. It's hard to be stuck with the same people for years. There were 87 people in my class.

Yes, agreed.

Since the private school sector covers some of that religious aspect -
we'll have to ask that you leave out the "Why you believe/don't believe in religion bit", but instead focus on the actual topic at hand, which is Children with Public/Private/Homeschooling.

I think as long as we can discuss what the private schools are doing in terms of religion vs public schools, that should be _on topic_. Do not under any circumstances start preaching why the private school needs such and such, nor slander at them for why they are doing it.

Or this topic becomes :locked:
I'm watching you.

I went thru a public school, so it's not TOO bad after all. My parents are too poor to pay for private schools anyway.

I don't really have a problem with any of the 3 types of school. I would love to homeschool my children if I had any, but if I did I wouldn't be able to work. In this day and age, income from just one parent isn't enough anymore. I would like to send my kids to private schools, but tuition is expensive as hell and we would both have to work 2 jobs just to pay the tuition. But I would like my kids to be away from the gangbangers that public schools usually are infested with. I also notice that school shootings also often occur in public schools and I don't recall any school shootings in private schools except for that little Amish schoolhouse and that one was not by a student. I would like the idea of sending my child to a public school rather than a private school if the schools weren't gang infested and if I could trust that a school shooting would not occur. School shootings scare me the most. So, I dunno.

I have no problem with home schooling. But I think that private schools steal money that could be used for educating all children instead of a very few. I also think that it pulls the smartest and wealthiest kids out of school and leaves the poor and average children behind. Imagine what a great education our children could have if parents who pay tution just donated half that money to their local public school! Also, wouldn't it be great if schools were actually totally integrated instead of still seperated, but now instead of by race (though many still are) by money.

this is true about private schools
Homeschooling may be ok for some situations, but often it seems like it is a parent is trying to brainwash their child.

Like what Reba said - I'm all for parental choice of school. I have attended all public schools. I even graduated from state college. Love them all. :cool2: It is hard to find a very good well-around public school but I give credit to my parents for their diligence in placing me in outstanding public schools. We moved about 6x in NJ just for schools.

My 11 year old has gone to 4 different public schools...she had no problems in any of them. Right now, she is in middle school and I just asked her if she liked her school and she said yes although she has been bullied a few times.

I vote in favor of public schools. It is suppose to be a free school except that we have to pay money for personal things like pictures for yearbook, prom, school supplies, buy lunch and etc., while private schools are expensive and I don't know much about homeschooling. In the past back in 1950 and 1960, it was a problem for me to go through the mainstreaming with hearing children, both elementary school and high school. I just wish that they provide ASL interpreter in the hearing classrooms including the special education for the deaf. Also in the special ed, we have small group of 6 to 8 students (I like it much better so we can have more attention on our special needs) although from 10th to 12th grade we had to cope with no interpreters and no notetakers in a large classrooms. So it was difficult. I would prefer Deaf schools but what I have been hearing said that the Deaf schools are giving them oral method too and yes, we do have sign language in the boarding schools. I still think Deaf schools help us understand the Deaf education and also socialization with other Deaf children so that we don't have to be lonely. I have never gone to Deaf schools because my mom was told that I am too smart and will graduate with flying colors (means will graduate very fast to finish school). My mom cried and so was I too. :( <sad>

I guess it depends on what's being taught.

I would prefer public school because it encourages the children to interact with other students and also encourages diversity.

I know some people who were homeschooled and ended up having a hard time making friends.

im raise deaf school dues my parent's choice and also my brother too!

IF i have my own kids somedays i would chose school whatevers public or deaf school to good education for my own kids somedays in future.

I'm in favor of public and private schools. I oppose homeschooling.

I think it depends on particular schools and it depends on particular parents.

Homeschooling can work if the parents are dedicated to actually teaching the kids as aposed to letting them stay at home and watch TV all day. I've seen that happen.

My brother and I went to public school (mainstream and special school) although my dad says if we had the money we would have gone private. He also spent a lot of time teaching us both out of school hours.

If a parent cares enough about their children's education and has the money then I see no problem with them going private.

In general I don't support homeschooling and prefer that kids go to public/private. I'm not saying that all of them will have this problem, but many cases of home-schooling wind up with the mother effectively brainwashing the child with their pseudo-religious beliefs and the child becoming socially inept because they haven't learned to deal with other authorities beside mommy and deal with many other students.

This is interesting. All the home school families that I know (including my own family) are well-adjusted but the families that other ADers know are not.
