Schools to Stop teaching Cursive!

Probably because it didn't exist at your time. I think it came into market at around 1980's.
Normally, for erasable stuff I used a pencil. If I used a pen, I didn't erase. :D

I've never used an erasable pen like that. Interesting.

Do you remember "Bottle-of-ink-in-a-pencil?" You would write, then wet the paper. It would become ink.

No. Seems kinda useless except for spy kids. Lemon juice is cheaper.

It looked like pencil writing until it got wet. It was a novelty in my grade school years.

I failed to find pictures of the pen we had to use for third grade cursive. It was ballpoint, but not retractable type. It had large area for the grip. I remember Dad moaning about having to buy it. I saw some fountain style pens that had that kind of grip on them. I never used fountain pens except for those with an ink cartridge.

If parents want more dumbing down in their kids' education, so be it. If they really believe that by eliminating cursive instruction their kids' grades will soar, so be it. If they want to limit their options, so be it. If grown ups prefer to print like kids, rather than kids wanting to write like adults, so be it. If we can't get our kids to make a little effort and use a little time away from the games to learn another skill, so be it. I guess the upcoming generation isn't as capable as previous generations to learn skills, so we should make school easier for them.

Some jobs are becoming more high-tech and specialized. It's not across the board.

I guess the Renaissance Man concept is dead. People learn one job skill now, and that's it. No one wants to learn any more than necessary just to get a job. Learning for learning sake's, and for being a well-rounded person are out the window.
I think the government want to dumb our kids down so they'll be easier control when they're older! The government does not like us know what is going on and by making our kids dumb the next generation will be too dumb
to protest and they will not know how to writes letters! I think writing letters is a more effected than sending emails to let the politician know how you feel!

Taking cursive out of the curriculum is not going to dumb kids down.

You're a minority , I never heard of anyone finding this hard.

Several posters here have stated that it was hard for them.

Um, I did. In fact, writing was hard for me. My fine motor skills were not where they should be, so I struggled with writing as a kid. Admittedly, my cursive was BETTER than my printing, but, that's not saying much. I can remember being VERY self conscience that my writing wasn't as "pretty" as the other students writing was. As I got older, I just learned to accept it.

This sort of bumps into another topic discussed in another thread, but as far as writing goes, it was never one of my strong suits.

As for cursive writing, I'm sad to see it go by the wayside, but I also see it as a fact of the modern age. As it's already been pointed out, we've become digitized, and personally, I think this may end up being better for all of us overall. Those that cannot adapt will have a difficult time, I'm afraid.

Right - my daughter finds this extremely hard. She still has problems and is 17. We work daily, but I know it will never get any better.

Yet another chiming in. Handwriting being difficult for someone is not an especially uncommon problem.

The government is people. This is a local school board making this decision. It's not a massive conspiracy, the government isn't an evil conglomerate, this is just people saying "Eh, this is kinda useless anymore."

You can't doodle on computers unless the Microsoft Word Processor software come with doodle capacity. ;)

Since you're talking about Word, I'm assuming you're on a Windows computer. Start > Programs > Accessories > Paint.

Enjoy your time doodling!

Also, Reba, I have about 1/2 a reply to your last long post addressing me, but it's on my computer at work, so I'll address the points you raised tomorrow morning.
