School does away with dominant holiday fun for kids

It is illegal to tell students that they can't praying or can't read religious books during free time, recess and lunch, also schools will be sued, no doubt.

I think it is very obvious, but some schools made mistake and eventually apology to students whoever is affected.

If you want full religious experience so you could go to private school, also some states offer school voucher or tax break.

When I was a little heathen in public elementary school I enjoyed all holidays at school because they were fun activities and a change in the daily routine. I didn't practice any religion at the time, so they didn't have that meaning to me. Our teachers, Jewish and Gentile, read Psalm 23 each morning, and we had fish sticks for lunch in the cafeteria every Friday. That was the extent of any religious observation.

That's true, strong religious movement isn't start until 1970s when my grandma became born again Christian in 1978 so she no longer drinking and smoking, start to attend the church most of time and believe that religious should be influence on our government.

My mother told me about back in 1960s, my grandma loved drinking beer and smoking.

We brought our lunch to school and some kids went home for lunch , we didn't have a cafeteria until we got to JR. high school . We had to salute the flag and say the pledge of allegiance each day.

. . . Celebrations of Valentine’s Day and the other “dominant holidays” are ending at one St. Paul elementary school, according to a letter from the principal addressed to families.

Principal Scott Masini of Bruce Vento Elementary School, whose student body is overwhelmingly nonwhite, explained in the letter that “my personal feeling is we need to find a way to honor and engage in holidays that are inclusive of our student population.”…

School pulls plug on celebrating dominant holdiays

This is ridiculous.

This is an American school. These are traditional American holidays. Immigrants come to America to become Americans. Sharing in American traditions helps to unify people from a variety of backgrounds. That, and learning English as a common language, ties different people groups together.

For school kids, especially in the fall and winter, it's nice to have holiday breaks in the routine. Wearing special outfits, exchanging cards, decorating homes and classrooms and eating special treats are a nice change in daily life.

I don't "believe in" Halloween but if little kids want to dress up in costumes and carve jack-o-lanterns, let them have some fun.

Kids enjoy making Valentine cards and eating heart candies and cupcakes.

I see this move as NOT inclusive but alienating. It makes it look like there is something wrong with Americans celebrating American holidays.

When Americans travel or move to other countries do we expect those countries to drop all their customs and traditions for our sake? Of course not. So why do we need to de-Americanize for them when people come here? Why do we need to deny our identity?

This makes home schooling sound better each day...I'm tired of all the politically correct garage. If you're offended by our customs/holidays, go back to your own country.

I attended all public schools but we sent our daughter to Christian school. Public education is not the same anymore.

Some schools don't allow parents to send cupcakes to school for their child birthday b/c kids are getting too fat. Maybe if kids walk to school instead of being driven to school by the bus or parents they wouldn't be so fat. My dad never drove us to school when it was snowing out , he only did one time and school been called off.

You paid taxes that fund the public school and it means you gave up to fight to reverse the politically correctness.

Homeschooling isn't for everyone, especially busy parents and children with special needs.

There is little to no politically correctness when I went to public school from K to 12, but our old city school used "Winter Break/Happy Holidays", however most students refer as Christmas. My old county school used Christmas and all traditional holidays, even they still using Christmas today.

In here, almost all private schools are religious so it isn't option for parents who live in secular life, also they don't accept everyone and could be expelled if you cannot meet minimum GPA requirement.

What are you doing if your daughter or son don't believe in God?

I'm surprised that you said public school is filled with politically correctness in South Carolina, but they are conservative as Alabama.

I think it is issue with federal regulation - it means school could lose the federal funding.

If state choose to override the federal regulation so they should provide a funding to replace the loss of funding.

In my state, all public schools, students can't have carbonated beverage and fast food container for lunch, it is state regulation that tied with federal regulation to receive max of funding.

There is problem with standardized exam that reduce greater number of recess, PE, lunch break and parties. I don't support mandatory standardized exam for all students and I believe that teachers should enjoy academic freedom, except adult-related materials.

My sister told me that Christian private school is no better when come with free time and load of homework. She told me that she had much less homework load at public school than in private school.

My parents live in secular life and it is difficult for my sister to familiar with bible book so she got poor grade in bible book class.

Kids aren't getting fat from school treats three or four times per year. It's what they eat every day at home, and lack of exercise that makes them fat. Treats should be just that--special occasion treats, once in a while.

We only took the bus if we lived more than one mile from the school. Anything less than that we had to walk. So, some years I walked and some years I rode.

Some schools eliminated PE classes, that's big problem, but in my state, PE classes are mandatory for K-8 but for high school, they only require one year of PE and can be repeat as elective.

I don't know if that's the reason or not but I've heard the reason is more to do with increasing food allergies than kids getting fat.

Yes, that what I heard about allergies are on rise.

It looks like schools don't want to be sued by parents for feeding to allergic kids.

Exactly-- started with peanut allergies years ago.

I know some LGBT students have been homeschooled due to bullying in public school, even same goes with some students who had legal issue with school or receiving threatening message from students that where school can't handle anymore or they may have allies with enemies.

My sister went from private school (preschool) to public school (K-4), private school (5-10) and homeschooling (10-12). My sister had to testify in court over victim of rape and different parents bought alcoholic beverage for anyone under 21. It was worst experience for my sister and no wonder about some students are moron.
