San Francisco Circumcision Ban

I had planned to steer clear of this...but what parent would want to tell their parents (the grandparents of Johnny) "We have BIG plans for Johnny. We are going to steer his interests and education to pursuing a career in the adult film industry. If he measures up, the sky is the limit!"

lol I tried to remember where did I pick up the line from film or tv show... I think it was Desperate Housewife.

an·ti-Sem·i·tism (nt-sm-tzm, nt-)
n.
1. Hostility toward or prejudice against Jews or Judaism.
2. Discrimination against Jews.

What academia do you hail from? Arabs have been using that excuse for YEARS: We're not anti-Semitic; we're Arab! Gimme a break. Antisemitism is just a replacement for the 'hatred' of Juden, or an English version of Judenhass or derogatory Yid (short i).

Anti-Semite refers to bigotry and xenophobia towards Jews. It has nothing to do with language or appearance. If that were not the case, there wouldn't be topics in academia like, 'Antisemitism in Arab lands" or "Islamic antisemitism".

Generally speaking, Arabs do not hate Jews. They, like Christians, share the old Testament and they recognize this, and there are cases of Jewish and Arabic communities living amicably together i.e. in Africa. The only real hatred is the ones between Palestines and Israelites and their supporters.

granted, fundamentalist radical Muslims do not like Jews but they don't like anyone who is not a fundamentalist.

And by the way, Arab and Muslim is not the same thing. My close friend Daniela is an Arab - a christian Arab from Lebanon.

You may be surprised to know that in Albania, the only country that never voluntarily handed over a Jew to the Nazis nor told of their existence were Muslims? Not one single Jew was betrayed. And it was Muslims who hid them. You should look that up. It's such a remarkable story.

That is complete poppycock. I can't go to Jordan or Saudi Arabia. Lebanon, Egypt, and a few other Arab countries are off limits. Iran, which is not Arab but Muslim, is a no no. Israel didn't send IDF forces into Afghanistan or Iraq and had to provide other services instead as the citizens wouldn't have tolerated Jewish forces there. My Jewish friends in the military had to consider the risks of having their faith stamped on their dog tags while overseas.

Also, anti-semitism has been in play in Arab countries for yeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarsss. Long before WWII and long before Zionism.

Don't kid yourself.

You don't have to be radical to not like a Jew.
And by the way, Arab and Muslim is not the same thing. My close friend Daniela is an Arab - a christian Arab from Lebanon.
I never said it was. But you know who is excluded from the 'Arab' category? Jews. Yeah. Jews in Palestine pre-Israel were Arab Jews...but then Israel came along and no one called them that. Jews in Arab countries are not labeled Arab. Funny how that works. Can you imagine if we called blacks in America 'Africans' and not 'African-American'? It's the same idea: Jews in Arab countries aren't allowed to be part of the national identity.

Poppycock. Many resisted Axis troops, and the large number of Jews that survived was a matter of Italian policies more than Albanian resistance (as Albanians couldn't resist much after Italy's invasion.) Albania wasn't the only example, and while many fled to Albania and South Africa, many in Albania were deported to camps. I know this firsthand, because I've met some who passed through. And yes, even Iraq had Jews until after WWII. (They were later deported, of course.) That doesn't mean that 'antisemitism' refers to Jews and Arabs.

Your arguments are red herrings and faulty logic. Nowhere have I claimed that "All Muslims hate Jews" or some such. All I said was that anti-Semitism refers to Jews only, and that Arab-Jewish and Muslim-Jewish relations are awfully sour...in almost every corner of the world.

poppycock!

what's a poppycock?

It means 'nonsense'. It's the term where I got the idea for 'frip frappery'. :D

San Francisco judge removes circumcision ban from ballot - CNN.com
(CNN) -- San Francisco residents will not be voting on whether male circumcisions should be banned in the city this fall.

A Superior Court judge ordered Thursday that the proposed measure, which had initially made it onto the November 8 city ballot, be removed entirely.

The measure proposed banning male circumcisions with the penalty of jail time or a $1,000 fine. It would not have granted religious exemptions.

From the beginning, the controversial ballot measure faced strong resistance from medical, religious and civil liberties groups.

Superior Court Judge Loretta Giorgi wrote that male circumcision is "a widely practiced medical procedure" and that medical services are left to the regulation of the state, not individual cities.

The judge's ruling was hailed by the Jewish Community Relations Council, the Anti-Defamation League and others who had sued to remove the measure from the ballot.

"While we are confident that the overwhelming majority of San Franciscans would have voted to defeat this extreme measure and are grateful for the outpouring of support from every sector of the community, we believe the right decision was made in the right venue," said Abby Michelson Porth, associate director of Jewish Community Relations Council.

The plaintiff's efforts were also supported by the American Civil Liberties Union and San Francisco's Medical Society. And even the San Francisco City Attorney's office expressed concerns about whether the measure was constitutional.

"It's unusual for a judge to order an initiative off the ballot, but the proposed circumcision ban presented that rare case where the court should block an election on an initiative," said ACLU Northern California staff attorney Margaret Crosby in a released statement. "Not only is the ban patently illegal, it also threatened family privacy and religious freedom. The court's order protects fundamental constitutional values in San Francisco."

Anti-circumcision advocates who had gathered more than 7,000 signatures to put the measure on the ballot expressed disappointment and said they would appeal.

"To remove an initiative before it comes on ballot is an extraordinarily irregular thing to do," said Lloyd Schofield, who is part of a Bay Area advocacy group that says the surgery violates human rights and likens it to "male genital mutilation."

"To go to this length to have it struck from the ballot is undemocratic," he said. "It's very, very unfortunate."

Yup, I agree with you and it is obviously unconstitutional, I bet Judge Kagan won't support it in court ruling.

Religion isn't reason for me to be circumcised because it is easy to clean and reduce the risk of HIV. It can be any reason to become circumcised, even religion too.

Exactly. There's more than just that, also it reduces the risk of cervian cancer in women.
